It really wasn’t that long ago United fans were sweating on Maguire’s fitness before the Europa League final. He’s far better than his narrative would have you believe (and how many players have United made look shite in recent years? All bar Rashford and sometimes Fernandes & Casemiro?). Wages would be my concern but he’s a smart, talented defender.
He’s not as bad as many make out, or at least he wasn’t at one point. But sometimes when a defender loses their confidence and composure like Maguire has in the last 18-24 months, then they’re done. It’s very hard to get that back.

He’s had a torrid time in the last couple of years and now makes a lot of errors. But most important of all, I don’t think he’s at all suited to the high line we are playing now. He’s too slow, and he turns too slowly. He’s as ill suited to the system as Dier is.

I would prefer to personally go for a younger HG talent, even if it meant a rougher short-term future of using a youth player due to injury, etc. Phillips did feature in the championship, so I would hope he would be close to being a 4th or 5th option here.

However, I also am realistic and would understand the logic of getting Maguire on a good deal since he has shown he is a good leader in the past, and is HG. There's been a good amount of ITK lately that we're looking to get ahead and bridge the gap to our youth HG pipeline so it's important to keep in mind how little HG talent we have as well as probably losing some more over the next year (Sess, Davies, etc.)

I dunno if he’s really that slow - but I do understand why many think he might not the best stylistic fit. I just find the “lol Maguire” bit so tiring, like he wasn’t in the last euros team of the tournament/United haven’t regularly embarrassed themselves without him.

No, just straight up #NotoMaguire
He makes Dier look like Lothar Matheus

does he though? Maguire is far better than Dier. He has played in and made the later stages of the last 3 international tournaments with englands success mainly based on a very solid defence. Dier doesnt make the squad.

He does not suit what we want and I would be very surprised if we tried for him seriously but he is far better than Dier.

There is no way we would want him. He is far too slow for the way we play. It's not happening.

Dav is world class compared to Maguire

Don’t get me wrong - I’m as disappointed with this link as anyone but trying to look at the positives and my view sort of centres on these points.

I absolutely think he’s a bad fit for our system, as is Dier. But is he actually as slow as Dier? More error prone than Dier? Both debatable points. Plus he is actually homegrown, unlike Dier. So hardly an upgrade but not really a downgrade.

In regards to Sanchez - I was all for keeping him over Dier. Clean slate with a new manager, better raw tools for the system but there seems to be something there where either we don’t want him, or he wants away (or both). Whilst he’s a better fit, he’s not exactly an incredible player and he has had his errors (albeit in an unfavourable system).

So call me mental. I may actually be mental for typing this but, whilst he’d be far from an upgrade, there are some elements here which make sense.

Cant see it happening anyway but let’s see.

Once the season starts getting difficult and we're losing games, I'll forget I said this but I'd rather just not sign Maguire and risk putting Phillips in.

If you're not going to sign somebody ready to work with Maddison to replace Kane, you're going to sell Hojbjerg, then just be clear on what the season is, it's a foundation setting season and it's a waste of time having Maguire come in and do a mediocre but reasonably better job at backup than simply putting in the defender who will make mistakes but will develop to be a player of potentially significant importance.

Let's not sign players for the sake of it, let's develop Sarr, Skipp, Gill, Phillips, Scarlett and Veliz instead of looking like we're signing players to make a difference who are only going to inhibit the greater goal. Signing Maguire isn't going to be the difference in a race for top4 or a title. Giving those players a huge opportunity to participate when it matters and not 6 minutes at the end of a 2-0 win. When we actually need somebody to come on and close a game finely balanced, when we have an injury, when we need a goal.

Either find players who are going to make a difference or develop players who might in the future. Don't waste time signing people who can be neither.

Don't know if United will even let him go now, as Varane is potentially out for 6 weeks, and they already don't have much cover as Shaw would often play CB last season

They’ll totally sign another CB if they need one. Probably one we’ve been looking at.

Worrying when this pops up towards the top of the list of threads with the deadline creeping up on us.

He’s one of the most overrated CB’s possibly ever and he just seems like a bit of a knob tbh.

He’s also slower than an oil tanker and would be an absolutely terrible fit for our high line.

It’s a no from me.

People losing their shit over getting Maguire are really gonna lose it when they realise he's actually Kanes replacement. That big head meeting the crosses we put in is guaranteed 20 goals a season.
