The 05/06 season the standard of the league was poor, we did well to get 5th, but the following season we were rescued by the brilliant partnership of Keane and Berbatov after we started pretty averagely.

It just winds me up that Harry (and I don't like him as a bloke) gets beaten with every stick possible and someone like Jol who was the most tactically inept manager I have ever seen in our dugout, is still treated like some pant on the outside of trousers wearing superhero. Jol didn't give a fuck about Spurs, or at least he didn't when he was whoring himself to Newcastle to get a payrise out of Levy.

Whatever the reasons Jol done well with what he had. By that reasoning, You could say that VDV (who wasn't even Harrys signing), and Bale (who Harry was letting go out on loan until injury problem) saved him last season...

Jol might not have been the best tactically but Harry's not exactly a mastermind tactician is he! Wasn't aware of Jol whoring himself to Newcastle but it's hardly any worse than Harry whoring himself to the media ever since the England job materialised.

The only problem Jol had was not being in charge of player transfers

We'll never really know how good he could have been because when we really needed to push on Comolli bought Kaboul, Boateng and Bent.

None of which improved the 1st team.

The main reason for 06/07 starting so badly, in my opinion, was the removal of our lynchpin Carrick and the replacement Zokora being nowhere near as good.

Jol was tactically inept, but I think he was only flirting with newcastle after the comolli/kemsley/levy plot to drive him out began.

Harry is a better manager than Jol, no question.

You're probably right but I think Jol played the better football.

Jols had much less experience. I think Jol could have achieved what Harry did last season with our squad.

The bottom line is we underachieved and would be better off with a manager that's capable of producing what the squad's capable of.

I agree. Not bad players though. Kaboul went on to become a French international, Boateng is an AC Milan regular, and Bent went for £24m.

Harry is a better manager than Jol despite the latter being more likeable.

He probably did but Harry has given us something no other manager in the prem years has: consistency. We very rarely lose big now, we don't often throw away leads, and we do well away from home. It's very refreshing. That's not to say there aren't negatives (failing to break teams down etc) but I sometimes forget how good we have it now. People moan about us not destroying anyone last year, but in the 2005/06 season we didn't beat anyone by more than 2 goals and we crashed out of the cups very early.

Levy signing......Bale on loan......time to give up and log off.

No chance.

Robinson with the long punt to Mido was worse than anything we have had to watch with Crouch.

And don't let the fact that Keane and Berbatov were an amazing partnership fool you into thinking it was great football by the team.

I remember getting very frustrated with Jols inability to win the big games. We failed in fa cup quarters an league cup quarters against arsenal and Chelsea despite leading in both and the uefa cup defeat to Seville was also disappointing. I like the guy but he didn't know what to do when things weren't working.

In more recent times...

Season 2010/2011, HR sticks with ineffective strikers throughout, denies problem during Jan window, ignores most effective striker, dumps Kranjcar Eek .....the rest is history of course.

Unless you've got other sources, we've actually only heard the Kemsley/Levy version of that spun through BEN and Dragon1, and later POTL. (It didn't seem to bother Levy that Ramos approached us whilst under contract to Sevilla.) As far as I know, no-one's ever said when this contact is supposed to have taken place, although I've always assumed it was when Souness got the boot. We had a whole barrage of anti-Jol propaganda leaked to the press after Ramosgate, which I thought was a pretty disgraceful way for the club to try and cover up and justify its own underhand dealings.

Jol could certainly be over-cautious at Spurs, but he had HSV and Ajax playing some very attractive football indeed, so one might speculate as to what we'd have seen if he'd got the players he wanted.

But I agree, the rubbish that gets written about Harry by some on here is plain embarrassing. Despite some poor results last season, he remains the most successful manager in terms of points per game that the club's had.

Surely due top the fact that when we were good, the system was 2 pts for a win?

Well, in terms of win % there's been 5 more successful spurs managers. In terms of win % there's not a great deal between HR and MJ. HR played 145, won 70, 48%. MJ played 150, won 67, 44%.

I don't see why people have to engage in this dick measuring over Redknapp and Jol. Both men have been more successful for us than anyone else over the past 25-30 years (at least) so what is the point in bickering over it? Jol is gone. Redknapp is here. Until Redknapp goes that's who is here and surely an analysis of how well he is doing is really the only thing that matters in the here and now. Jol ain't coming back.
