I suffered a massive injury to my leg/ ankle and didnt play for 2 years. Despite being told never to play again by the doctors I did (stupidly, but I don't like being told what to do by anyone) for 2 years and now I am riddled with Arthritis. We'll never know how much his ankle injury affected him. I remember reading at the time that he was going to have to play with some pain the rest of his career. Anyone who has played any level with pain knows how this affects you physically and mentally.
Anyway, getting back on track, having an injury to an ankle restricts you in so many ways and if you still feel pain it is unavoidable because your weight goes through the ankle with every step you take. Now imagine that weight bearing down on your injured ankle as you twist and turn and the impact of the ball and worse a late tackle.
The thought of that never leaves you
The pain never leaves you (if it is as bad as has been reported)
*disclaimer, obviously I didn't play anywhere near his level and he will have better medical care, physio etc, but if still in pain then its similar in that sense.
