Carrick was so important to us, as people have said before, Berbatov has replaced Carrick in the sense that he creates stuff just further up the pitch. What we lost defensively with Carrick, we gained with Berbatov. So if we got Carrick back and managed to get a good enough replacement for Berbatov we could crack the top4 as we very nearly did when we had Carrick.

Yeah I think having a midfielder who can pass will help us replace Carrick in some ways. With JJ and Zokora we simply havn't had that.
Modric still doesn't offer the defensive aspects that Carrick did though. We need someone else to do that.
it's going to be so interesting to see how wendy plays it. with jenas and zokora pretty much always playing (except that bit when jenas was dropped) it's going to be fascinating to see the opening day formation and experiments in pre-season. i can't wait.
and in response to the question: yes. any day i'd do that swap anyday. since carrick left we've leaked goals. we'd still score goals with keane, bent, malbranque, jenas, lennen, et al, albeit not as many perhaps, but we'd certainly keep more clean sheets, thus winning more.

Carrick is nowhere NEAR the player that we need....and to sacrifice Berby would be total lunacy(...and TREASON to boot lol!).
As has been pointed out....from reports (to be borne out during the upcoming Euro08's) Modric is a class performer....and light years ahead of Carrick, in every dept! We are 'sorted' Thank You Very much, Mr Ferguson! However there may be a 'cleaning' job next season? COYS!
