Meaning that many clubs can still qualify for the EL but fewer teams actually qualify for the group stage. 46 teams in the groups stage is ridiculous. Not to say they should be denied the chance to qualify if they have had a good enough domestic season but that the group stage contains a good reasonable 32 teams, all of which are quality, be it through auto qualification or besting a tough qualifying route.

I think UEFA would say that it gives lesser teams a go and allows them to generate extra revenue.

But of course, they need to drop down 8 CL teams mid-season for some stupid reason so that can't happen.
You don't know the reason?

Also there are 3 rnds of qualifying as is and then the playoff round. Everyone could get a game and be happy in the competition proper but KO comps are a thing of the past. Need to waste 4 months playing in a group first.

Hence, it's got the feeling of a mickey mouse comp right from the off.

Does Champions League feel like a mickey mouse comp?

Group stage always will feel a little odd for me for a club tourney. More games and money for the big clubs though. The prize money for winning the EL is tiny in comparison though. Why not just give that 1.8m to every group stage club and the clubs who reach the playoff round. The small clubs still get the financial boost but the group stage aligns with the CL in terms of numbers and groups and the quality increases.

As for why the CL clubs drop down...to reward the big clubs who fail with a second chance of a trophy? No idea otherwise. Certainly doesn't add legitimacy to the comp. The opposite in fact.

So then... knockout stage and a run down of who's left

Seeded teams in Green / Unseeded on Blue

We're seeded so looks like main teams we want to avoid are:
  • Dortmund
  • Sevilla
  • Valencia

bottom line, if you enter a tournament, then you play to win it.... end of. Spurs appear to have a squad big enough to manage the fixture list

I'd love one of them just for the away day!

Teams to avoid from my point of view are Fenerbache, Galatasaray and Shakhtar.
I'd quite like to get the best teams early. We either beat them and get confirmation that this is a tournament we can actually win, or we lose and get to focus on the league.

I still remember the ludicrous policing we received the last time we played Sevilla. Absolutely shocking getting caught up in that. Riot police hitting anything that moved including women with their batons.

Yeah of the western European teams, they're the one I want least now you mention it.

1. Sporting - great city to visit, beatable team, and a 50,000+ seater sradium, so we'll get plenty of tickets!
2. Dortmund - good city, huge stadium so plenty of tickets, will be a great stadium to say I've visited, only negative is I wouldn't be confident
3. Valencia - pretty much exactly the same as Sporting.
4. Marseille - another huge stadium (67,000), easy to get to, beatable, only issue is the French situation at the moment.
5. St Etienne - as above, but 40,000 seater.

That would be my top 5 choice. All the others are not so good for one reason or another. Fiorentina would definitely be on that list if it wasn't for the fact we were there only 12 months ago!

I went to Dortmund for the pre-season game. Damn, must be close to 10 years back now. Epic stadium and had a great couple of nights out there.

Generally speaking, not fussed with what team we get. We have to beat at least a couple of very good teams to win this comp. If we vanquish them early or later on, it still has to be done and if we can't do it then that's that.

Oi.

Hopefully Poch learned yesterday that rotation is a good thing. Against very good opposition, we absolutely dominated the entire game with squad members. Carroll, Onomah, N'Jie, Davies, Wimmer and Trippier were all brilliant. These guys are hungry for opportunities to prove themselves. Why not rest the first team for the league and give them that chance?

Money perhaps? You don't think big clubs are rewarded with a second chance of a trophy just for the sake of it do you.

Is that when Berbatov dummied to shoot, dragged the ball outside and slotted it in?
Yeah. Back when the novelty of not completely sucking as a footballing enterprise was fresh and vibrant. Great times.

I wonder where Davenport is these days? Haha, to think a CB combo back then could have ended up as d
Davenport and Toe Knee had injuries hit.

Maybe but an extra £4m potentially, if they win the whole thing, is hardly going to make or break those clubs. But yes, money is behind everything. Football is what it is now.

The way I look at it, there's no team in this competition were it wouldnt be a surprise at all if arsenal, man u or Chelsea beat them over two legs.
And we currently are more than a match for those 3 clubs .

I'm confident we can do something, schedule and injuries permitting

No, its money for UEFA.

perhaps after they have finished with FIFA they can look into UEFA

cut out all the qualifying rounds, always allow 1 team minimum from each qualifying country go into the group stages of the CL, and stop drop outs from CL losing qualifiers, and group stages.

I wished it could go back to the good old days 3 comps, and just K/O from round 1

on our participation in the comp, like all comps I want us to compete and hopefully win it
