How is Harry going to react?

Harry now is in a position to see what it truly is to be a Spurs manager.
Prem history dictates, skillful and expensive footballers playing for Spurs, will basically let you down if you are a manager.

Make no mistake, none of this is Harrys fault. None of it. He could have put everyones favorite starting 11 out today but it is mid week, cold, away, do me a favor Spurs.

Harry right now is wondering what the hell is going on? Just like Ramos, just like Jol, just like a dozen competent men before him. It's not lack of Lennon, its not Kings knee, it isn't a semi fit Iceman or a Jermain Jenas mincing around in the middle of the park.

We sign and stick by a certain type of player. Young, skillful and plenty of resale value. Lots of cash, flash, hype and ability.

When Spurs have taken strides forward, it has been when we have signed expensive players in terms of EXPERIENCE or CHARACTER. Naybet, Carrick, Davids, Berbatov, Wilson etc are the players who gave us a shining light, something to believe in when you are being outplayed or the ball isn't dropping quite right for you. And even players like Lee, Salty etc were valuable because they would not let the mental game creep in.

Lets face it, you can see if we are going to win or not by looking at the faces of Crouch, Defoe, Modric or Hud in the second half. Because we have a defeatist hard done by streak down the backs of 50% of our starting 11.

So how is Harry going to react? Because we all know how the players will react. (Naughty school boy act, get a few results, maybe a cup run before taking the foot off the gas again just in time to f@ck up the end of the season for us)

Harry...take a big whiff. You are FINALLY a Spurs manager. You are in that chair you wanted.

I agree with you Gibbsy.

I think we've been that way for about 20 odd years.

This summer we need to sign players with the right mentality - players who are professional and won't give up.

Realistically they'd be in their late 20s and have Premier League experience. Whatever, just get them in.

We need to toughen up the squad mentally.

Harry already knew what the problem was when he came to the club, thats why he tried to get players like Viera and Bellamy and put Joe Jordon in his staff. My prediction at the start of the season was that we would finish 7th or 8th and I haven't seen anything so far that makes me change that prediction. I also predicted that Harry might be sacked should we finish 7th-8th, thats why he needed to buy players that we need for this season, not next season or two seasons time because he might be out of job by then. E.g The likes of Walker and Naughton, two right backs that we don't need. The honeymoon is over! The '2 points from 8 games' stuff doesn't work for this season.

Not only do we need mentally tough players with experience of both playing in the premier league and winning in the premier league, but we need players with pace. Only bale looks like he can outrun anyone. We're too one dimensional and with it predictable. Harry has some tough decisions and some blindingly obvious easy ones regarding playing staff comings and goings in the summer. I hate to say it but we may be in need of quite an overhaul. Especially up front. We've been worked out now and need a different, more direct type of player to give us options. We'll see over the next few weeks if Harry has it in him to turn this around. Expect we'll learn if the players have it in them too. There are a few o them who I doubt do.

Harry is up in court today - I think he should have handed over the reins to Bond/Allen whoever for this week.

I expect a reaction similar to the Burnley Cup game of last season.

We just don't have anyone willing to take responsibility. To grab the game by the scruff of the neck. I would love someone like Modric to be that man, but he's a few years away from becoming that type of player.

Harry brought Keane back for this reason, so he could take charge on the pitch, but it didn't work out. He tried to sign Barry, but City stole him from under our noses. He tried to get Bellamy, but West Ham wouldn't deal with us.

It's difficult to see where this type of player will come from now. We can't get a Rooney, Lampard, Fabregas or Gerrard. And now Man City have the likes of Barry, Tevez and Bellamy in their ranks its difficult to see us keeping up with them.

We'll be fortunate to get 4th this season. Trouble is, if we qualify for the Champions League, we still need a lot of work to be able to compete in it. Hopefully qualification for CL would attract a few big name players. But we have to get there first, and it's looking less and less likely.

you have to wonder if the court appearance is affecting Harry

but of course Gibbs is right - there are problems that go deeper than harry

one of them is the misguided expectations of too many of our supporters and their refusal so often to back the team and harrass the oppo

it makes it way too easy for teams like stoke hull and wolves to come to the lane- because it isn't like an away match in terms of hostility

good points re lee and stalteri - and they were regularly slaughtered on here and at the Lane - absolutely shameful

it's almost as if there's a self-loathing amonst many of our fans re our club-

time and again i've met spurs fans over the years who are defensive about our great club

'someone has to suffer' 'for my sins' (it's a bit like a jesus complex at times - maybe there's a thesis here on our jewish inheritance)

we are one of the top ten clubs in England - we have a proud tradition

if anyone 'has to suffer' it's norwich, leeds crystal palace west ham supporters

Oh you mean he literally is! I thought you meant metaphorically due to our recent poor form.

Thank god I realised that in time before going on a right old rant about how we should stick by our manager and that you don't deserve to be called a supporter. Could have been embarrassing.

I dont think we need 'an overhaul' and please god that doesnt happen. this team is all about passing and movement and will only improve with time (well they should), provided we can hold on to our star players in the summer (lennon, modric, bale increasingly so, et al) and sort out an absolute killer in front of goal (or if defoe gets there), then I think we have alot to look forward to next year.

EDIT - forgot to mention steel. we definitely need more steel

I've said ever since day one of his reign that I think Harry is a good manager, an understandable choice at the time, but not the manager to take us into the top four. Loads of people have said that. It appears to be true at this point in time.

Fair enough, there have been points this season that I've wondered whether I made a mistake - and I'll forever be thankful for the incredible Wigan game. But where we stand now and our recent form suggests to me that Harry's not the man.

I think he's got the team: in my opinion we're better than Villa and Liverpool and should be more consistent and cohesive than Man City. But most of the team he inherited or were pretty obvious people to sign if we could get them (Krancjar for a steal, Wilson, Defoe - who in their right mind wouldn't go for them???).

So where has Harry taken us? He's got us playing much nearer to our potential than Ramos and that's why we shot up the league initially. Good work there but it was always likely to happen to a certain extent (in that case though Harry exceeded expectations).

What we need now though is someone who will take us to or above our potential. MoN does this at Villa, they haven't got in my opinion anywhere near as good a team as us but they're probably going to finish above us.

Saying that, we went for the big game manager in Ramos and it didn't work. And I'd rather Harry stay in charge in some ways because I know he'll do a decent job, instead of having another high-profile disaster.

We just haven't found the magic formula or the string of good luck to get us there. I'm a bit worried about how long we can continue nearly making it but not quite. If Modders and Lennon get fed up (and who could blame them if we don't qualify?) then we'll be in a bad position.

Also, I'm worried about this court case and how its affecting the team. That's a complete hunch though.

We've never been near consistently getting into the top four during the whole 20 or so years of the premiership so it's not really surprising that Harry hasn't already secured fourth with 12 games to go a season after looking in danger of being relegated. That doesn't mean he wont get us into the top four this year, or next. Harry has been at the club to short a time to say that he's reach his glass ceiling.

Its a bad time for us to go through a sticky patch, with Bolton away on Sunday (a place we have a terrible record) we could see our season fall apart in a very short space of time.

We have a talented but mentailty weak squad, we are really missing the drive of Lennon and teams are snuffing out our attacking threat well at the moment. Much like Arsenal in recent seasons, without true leaders on the pitch when we have a rough spell it can last and be very costly...We need a result to turn things around very soon, I fear we will struggle up at Bolton (draw at best in my eyes) and if we drop anymore needless points in the league our CL ambitions could crumble (if they are not already all but gone).

Things are not as gloomy as people are making out though, we have still mostly been playing well. A side like ours has not been playing together long enough to really pull together and grind out the results we need, great when things go our way frustrating when they do not.

We need time to build, something as a club we have neglected for so long and why we constantly take 2 steps forward 2 steps back.

So Palacios Carrick and Berbatov weren't 'Young, skillful and plenty of resale value. Lots of cash, flash, hype and ability'? Do you actually think?
