Chris Hughton says Newcastle are building up a head of steam ahead of his own emotional return to White Hart Lane. Hughton spent most of his playing career at Tottenham before going on to serve as a coach to 10 different Spurs managers.

And on Sunday the 49-year-old – appointed a coach under Kevin Keegan last month – will make his first return to the club since his exit, along with that of Martin Jol, earlier this season.

Hughton said: "Of course it's difficult. When you spend so many years at a club, it's always a wrench to leave.

"From my point of view, the most important thing was to stay positive and look for a new challenge."

Newcastle go into the game on the back of a win and a draw, with those results having eased, if only slightly, the club's relegation fears.

Hughton believes those results will prove a turning point in the battle against the drop.

Tottenham are seven points and two places above United.

Hughton added: "Winning becomes a habit, as does not winning. What you want to be able to do is build-up a head of steam.

"You can get a huge amount of confidence from one win.

"That's the stage we're at at the moment, and we're very confident we can go on from here."

For old times sake

Can he bring back his clipboard? Poor old Gus has been having to make do with little bits of paper.

But he's got the Kevspeak already.

I really hope we spank them! But Newcastle have become some sort of really annoying stripey bogey team lately - Mind you it's Ramos vs Keegan, I'm pretty sure I know where my money is!

Except that Ramos is a master of anti-tactics - how will he manage against a master of not having any tactics at all, ever?

Which could be dangerous as he could do the unpredicted which is not in the tactics book, leaving Ramos to scratch his head!!

Can you imagine Don Juande Ramos playing King Kevin Keegan at chess? It would be check mate in two moves.

Keegan is a great "once more into the breach" type motivator. However, making every game a matter of life and death is pretty unsustainable. I trust and hope Keegan's pump monkey speechmaking won't be sufficient on Sunday.

Chris is spurred on for return

Mar 27 2008 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

CHRIS HUGHTON is banking on cashing in on his vast knowledge of Spurs when Newcastle United go to White Hart Lane on Sunday.
And he warned United today: “You have to stifle Spurs and not let them play or there will be problems.”
Hughton spent 13 years as a full-back for Spurs from 1977, was caretaker manager in 1998 and assistant manager from 2001 until, along with Martin Jol, he was sacked on October 25.
And he will be returning to White Hart Lane for the first time since then on Sunday as a key member of Kevin Keegan’s team.
Not surprisingly, it is a big occasion for Hughton and he told me today: “I have been asked if it will be eerie for me going to the Lane on Sunday.
“While I don’t think this will be the case, it will be certainly strange, although I have to add that I am not the most emotional of people.
“Obviously, I will be meeting a lot of people I know, including the Spurs players, for the first time since I left.
“But it will only be a good day for me if Newcastle United can get some kind of result.”
Hughton was not employed by Keegan specially as a defensive coach, but he admits he has worked more on the back four than any other group of players at the United training ground.
And United are beginning to feel the benefits of Hughton’s experience with just one goal conceded in the last two games in the Premier League.
Hughton was at Jol’s side when United completed the double over Spurs last season and again when Newcastle just about put the final nail in the Dutchman’s coffin with that 3-2 victory back in October.
He added: “Don’t forget Spurs finished fifth last season and the fact Newcastle beat them twice, and again at St James’s Park in October, should give the players some confidence on Sunday.
“Looking back at last season’s game, while Nicky Butt scored the winner for Newcastle, Obafemi Martins’ equaliser was a fantastic goal.
“When you concede a goal you look at the reasons why but there was nothing Spurs could have done about that goal from Martins.”
When I asked Hughton the 64,000 dollar question on what United’s best chance on Sunday is he wasted no time in replying: “We will have to stifle their play.
“But obviously it will not be easy. Spurs now have a very good side and they are very difficult to beat on their own ground.
“And if we allow them to get their passing movement going they will hurt you, especially with strikers of the quality of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane.
“If we sit back it is inevitable that they will get a goal so we have to get in there among them and in the likes of Nicky Butt, Joey Barton and Geremi we have just the players to do that.
“But we also have the players up front in Oba Martins, Michael Owen and Mark Viduka to hurt them.
“Apart from the Liverpool game at Anfield we have been creating chances and I am sure we will get some on Sunday.”
Hughton and the rest of the first team squad had their day off today, but I left the coach scouring the papers to see how Berbatov fared for Bulgaria last night in the win over Finland.

I'm sure he'll get a warm welcome back anyway, but we'd better get 3 points off them.

Never really liked Hughton as an assistant.......he seemed to be the common theme in our 'up and down' ways.

Seems i am on my own there though!
