7 months is a pretty quick recovery for a torn ACL:

He suffered a very serious injury on the knee during training on September 2011 and was sidelined for more than seven months. After undergoing surgery, he went through a long recovery period and on April 2012 he stated he was ready for Guardiola's call anytime. On 29 April, he returned to the field as a substitute on the 71st minute replacing teammate Sergio Busquets against Rayo Vallecano on a 7–0 away trashing win for the catalan side, playing as a central midfielder and putting up a decent act. After the match, Afellay stated his happiness for his return, and that he had confidence on Barcelona's next manager Tito Vilanova.

He played a couple of times at the end of the season. Not enough to tell how he has recovered but I think he's well worth looking at.

I think he's actually ideal for the VDV role as backup. He has played mostly on the wings for Barca because they're so well off in those central attacking positions. But I think he's better suited to playing the central attacking midfield role. Either way his versatility would be very useful.
