Is football pointless?

Football is finally getting to a stage where it is pointless we know who the top 4 are going to be and we know the candidates for relegation. There is starting to be a gulf in the premier league where the top players only play for the champions league sides and everyone believes it should be that way.

Loyalty is gone in football we are the fans who support our players when they go through periods of lack of form and when they starting to get a bit of form they stick two fingers up at us and say i'm off.

Football clubs are now just money making machines and the players are now all just mercenaries. While the tabloid and broadsheet media build up the image of these whinging superstars and do not give fair journalism when it comes to the big 4.

This makes me ask the question is there any point of following football it is a sport which is distancing itself further and further away from its heart and soul THE FANS.

I totally agree. And due to the prem TV money it wont just be top four in the UK it will be top four in Europe too. Its OK though people will get bored and the arse will fall out of football again. Then the working man can have it back.

I couldn't disagree more:

1. I think the "big 4" is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Never has the gap between these 4 and the rest been less. Neither Arsenal or Liverpool have the funds to significantly strengthen their squads and they are clearly dropping off the pace. Meanwhile, the next batch of teams are now attracting bigger players than before and do have some cash about them. Take Modric, Dos Santos, Berbatov, and Jo as 4 examples. Don't forget that it's not that long ago that Everton, of all people, broke the big 4.

2. As for players loyalty and sticking two fingers up at the club, I can only assume you refer to Berbatov and Keane.....neither of whom have publicly stated that they want to leave. Believe the red tops if you like but I prefer to wait for official statements. Keane has given more than most to Spurs and stayed longer than your average footballer these days. I truly believe that he loves the club. Does that mean he HAS to stay....no. And what about other clubs, many of whom have long term players in their ranks.

3. Football clubs HAVE to make money in order to survive and make further money. They are there to entertain you the supporter and they simply cannot do this without making money. Would you still be happy if they concentrated solely on entertaining you in the 2nd division without trying to make money?

To be honest, your posts reeks of disillusionment at the current stories regarding Berbatov and Keane but is based on little or no fact. These 2 players may well go but the club will go on. Man Utd. didn't fair too badly after the loss of Beckham, RVN etc did they?

I hate this top 4 rubbish.

The overuse of it has affected teams mentalities and it only reinforces the stereotype.

You listen to a lot of managers, for instance Keegan and Redknapp. They say they cant possibly compete with the top 4. That might be true in terms of finance, purchasing power, but on the pitch its 11 vs 11 and if teams were more ambitious they would take points of the 'top 4', bringing them closer to everyone else.

If teams like pompey and newcastle hand over points to the 'top 4' while focusing on taking points off us then yes, the top 4 will stay the top 4. Its only a lack of ambition and belief that stops the league being different.

Just look at Barnsely in the fa Cup. In fact look at the fa cup as a whole. If you are organised, have belief and work harder and better you can beat anyone.

Football is great as long as you don't invest too much in it and expect some kind of victorian set of behaviours in return.

Because they have so much more purchasing power that is translated on to the pitch. Look at Chelsea, if they aren't playing well then they can just bring on a sub that only cost them £24m. What other team could afford that? Everton are in debt attempting to keep up and Leeds nearly destroyed itself to break into the top four.

Apart from Blackburn what other non 'top four' team has won the Premier League?

The only two teams I can see that can challenge the top four are Tottenham and Aston Villa because they have some financial power and a decent enough fan base.

Just look at Barnsely in the fa Cup. In fact look at the fa cup as a whole. If you are organised, have belief and work harder and better you can beat anyone.

Belief and hard work only counts for some it. The other reason is the top four view the FA Cup as a second rate tournament, so they don't really care if they are knocked out. As far as they are concerned the FA Cup is a trophy that only becomes important if they haven't won anything else or it is going to be a part of a league and cup double.

Please excuse me for pointing something out about English Football. It has been the same since the 50's....A pretty average league with some great, average and mostly bad players. The emergence of the Euro players has revolutionized the Premiership and English Football in general.
The standard of the TOP League in England has rarely been the BEST in Europe. Sure there were good teams...who triumphed in the CL and it's previous competitions but these were teams filled full of Scots, Welsh and Irish (both flavours!). Even with that 'usual' assembly of good and bad...there was always a gulf with the skill of the rest of the world. Yes, ofcourse there were many players who were truly World Class but, on an International basis there was no success (discounting 1966 , Sir Stanley Rouse and his debatable FIFA Regime, home advantage and dodgy Refs etc lol). It is still the same...and the only shining light in UK Football seems to be the recent influx of WC players from abroad. If some had their way there would be a misguided return to the dark ages of the 1920's - 1960's and all would be well in the World....for England at least. It is high time (well past it in my opinion) that a true representation of where the Premiership actually should figure. GOOD but ONLY because of the influx in recent years of the BEST that money can buy.
So where does that leave THFC? On a knife edge...to be honest....liable to stagger either way....Perennial 5th place finishers or genuine CL Qualifiers! It is a nervous time for Yids, the world over. The imminent loss of Berbs and maybe Keano can have an effect of out long term future. Let's just pray that we are 'up to' that optimistic forecast! COYS!

I can safely say that we are never going to break into the top 4 by selling them our best players (Carrick/Keane/Berba) weakening ourselves and making them stronger.

My belief about the way football has gone, is that the clubs/Plc/consortium's/privately owned, players and media have moved/conducted/falsify themselves towards there own selfish ends and played on this romantic ideal we fans visualize.

The fans particularly British, still use words like loyalty, thick and thin, till i die...etc when really the clubs/Plc/consortium's/private club, players and the media don't really give a toss.

It is the ultimate paradox...we should still support the clubs and the players but there has to be a kind of new movement within supporters to adjust the balance... the fans somehow must demand a bigger say in how the sport is run.

As for the top 4, yes a clubs like Spurs, Aston Villa, Everton, Newcastle, Man City, can smash the cartel.

Chelski came from nowhere and did it, so it is possible.

HAHA i thought this the other day but then i thought about something else!

When you watch spurs you still watch with 100% attention and passion.

Football is and always will be dominant, its obvious we are entering a new phase of the PL, but football has always had its changes, bet when the first £100,000 transfers were going through people were shocked!

But it has not stoped football being played for centuries and officially atleast 125 years for us :p so my response to this thread.... FOOTBALL IS NEVER GOING TO BE POINTLESS

...Until we have players with robotic legs like on that advert!
