The fact is watching Spurs some weeks does it seem there are too many players in the team that have tendencies to go missing.

People seem to comment about this all the time. The culprits most referred to are Lennon, Dawson, Chadli, and Siggurdson.

The fact is I remember when I used to moan about certain players Kanoute and Carrick. While at the time they were probably the best players in the team apart from King.

Is the fact that we expect world beating performances from all our players week in week out cause us to not see what we do have, so Spurs fans are just moaners.

On the other hand is it that these players are either not good enough or is it that they are inconsistent. So do we have a right to consistently moan about them.

The fact is I personally am a chief culprit when it comes to moaning about Spurs players and over criticising them.

So wait, what's the fact?

If Tim is going to keep kicking over the bottles we are going to need all the water carriers we can get...

As for the OP, well the fact is.....well actually, I'm not entirely sure what the fact is. There seems to be a few to choose from.

i think as fans we have scapegoats who will always get blamed. They are easy targets like Dawson, Siggy etc who are too slow, or dim witted etc. Both AVB and Tim have played Dawson simply because he is one of our best defenders. But some fans think he is the devil incarnate. There's football and there's football fans. Its the way it is.

I don't know about water carriers, but I certainly don't think we've got the mix right. I don't think that's something we can particularly fix on the training ground either. I always come back to the fact that the player who makes us tick is Dembele, and I'm not sure we are using him right, or if he is the right player for us at all. We are slow to build, and he is our main architect. Frustratingly I've seen him have fantastic games for us, so quite why that isn't more regular I don't know. I'm not sure anyone fears enough of our players either. Adebayor has come back in and has commanded respect from opposition players - no one else has earned that. Eriksen has threatened too, but is still developing and has been inconsistent. He is still 21, less than a month older than Lamela, so we should afford him the same time to develop.

I think there is only room for two of Bentelab, Dembele and Paulinho too. Need more craft in the middle, I would like to see Eriksen playing in front of two of those, with Lennon and Townsend/Lamela on the wings.

Wasn't water carrier Cantona's term for a holding mid when referring to Deschamps?

Also what Makelele was referred to as quite a lot - someone who puts in a hard shift but not being particularly creative was always my reading of it.

What the OP seems to be describing with the term "going missing" are what I'd call "passengers", which is nearly the opposite.

That was my thinking. Win the ball, pass it to someone who can do something with it.

As far as being a passenger goes, I don't think we have anyone who is like that by nature. Some, sadly mainly Sig for me, I just think we might be a step too far. Lennon, up until recently anyway, would at least work his socks off which is a big part of the game so even if not providing chances he was still doing his part defensively. I also think that was part of why people started calling for Lennon instead of Townsend earlier in the season. Townsend, although beating his man relentlessly, ultimately offered about the same result going forward while not doing the same amount of work defensively. I think what we're seeing now is that it is no longer enough for what we're trying to do. When you see the amount of running players like Hazard, Oscar and Willian do as well as being very good going forward it makes it much clearer that we can't rely on players doing one or the other. Alright, those 3 players are very talented (and expensive) and have Mourinho pushing them, but it shows that it can be drilled into creative types. They also have to have the athletic ability to do it, of course.
