Dan do you seriouslt think that AA is still an option? I very much doubt it as the chances of him signing for us was slim with us bottom, with JR now gone so have our chances of getting AA aswell....

Nope, not now we've lost the Ramos factor.

Only with Baldini on board might have an outside chance once again.

That was kind of my point that all transfers were known about pre confirmation, apart from Modric, and that few leaks were plugged.

Yes, but they were all much much further down the line - our full undertakings weren't being spewed out anymore.

Am I the only one entirely unconvinced by "the Ramos factor" in signings?

Just who exactly did we sign during Ramos tenure who we could not have signed before if we had had the will?

I wouldn't say I was convinced but wouldn't say Modric, Dos Santos and Bentley lied. What I am having trouble reconciling is the idea that Ramos didn't want these players but they came because of him. One of these theories has to be false, I suspect the former. I cannot imagine Ramos saying 'I don't want you' and Modric saying 'I want to play for you' to which Ramos said 'Ok then'. I think some journos have rehashed the same stories from last year and replaced Jol with Ramos and Modric with Boateng.

I think Ramos is a very good coach but was unsuited to this league, club and country. Stories are coming out that Monchi, Caparros and Del Nido were the true constructers of Sevilla's success and Ramos imput was marginal. There is an article on BBC to that effect and Sid Lowe was talking highly of Caparros at the weekend, though not diminshing Ramos' record. All that proves is that Ramos is not a magician. You don't have the success Sevilla had without the man in the dugout and at the training ground being very good.

He just failed here because he came in acrimonious circumstances, had problems communicating with the players, failed to build a recognizable and successful style of play and underestimated the strength of the other nineteen teams. That is my take.

People looking down on Rednapp need to ask themselves this- if Rednapp had been from a foreign country and had success with smaller clubs like Jol did and like Ramos did before Seville, would their attitude be the same? Is it the right time to demand a manager who can take us to the top four? Wasn't that what Ramos was signed for? Shouldn't our priorities be more modest right now? Wasn't the reaction yesterday illustrative of the immediate positive effect he is able to produce?

Point taken. Do you think even with Ramos here we would have got Arshavin and did you really see light at the end of the tunnel with him, because I didn't.

Thought Huddlestone had a good game yesterday tbh. Been wantiing him in the Starting XI for a while. Dont really see the need for Diarra when Tommy is at the club.

Because as good as Huddlestone is at passing, creating and supporting attacks, he's actually not a DM and never will be.

well arshavin said himself that ramos called him and wanted him to replace keane, he said he'd agree terms with us and wanted to work with ramos.

the only problems were with zenit, not arshavin.

Yes but would he still come to us with us in the relegation zone? The issue being, for me, that with Ramos we weren't going to get out of there.

The problem was we were miles away from their asking price.

Dont forget there will be other teams looking at stripping Portsmouth of there stars come January. The problem with defoe, he still may not play every week if he comes. What I have seen, is that is he does not play consistantly, then his goals dry up. If we can stay in Europe and the cups, he may not be able to play week in week out hence why we should have 4 strikers.
Mind you - still would have him back.

Main positin though is a central midfielder, bye bye Zakora, hello Diarra.

I don't think we will get more than 2 players from Pompey. Defoe and diarra. Like we found out in the summer, money talks and Pompey ain't in a position to reject good offers

That's football i guess. I think its different to the Sevilla situation where we seemed to be very underhanded in getting Juande, their president would have never sold to us, and didn't have too. It seems as though Pompey are a little tight for cash though and if we come back in for JD especially, i think it will be similar to Keane going to Liverpool, once a player wants to leave as long as you get a decent price you sell them.
