IMO that only happens with some pretty tough add ons.
Probably true, but hes not worth more than that imo. Even at 20 mill it's a pretty big gamble.

Great post. But equally the funds are there for more expensive acquisitions too. We keep being told this by a range of itk. People need to keep all the information in mind before micturating all over their weekendsFfs. We have literally built ourselves up from consistent mid-lower table performances to top 3 three years in a row based on our sensible buying on a budget. To criticise our transfer policy is genuinely laughable - what we’ve done over the past 15 years is probably the biggest success story in the league considering our budget relative to the teams we’re competing with. There isn’t any reason why it should be us in this position right now rather than Newcastle, Everton or Aston Villa. We’d all like to see us make that final push to another level this summer. But at least have a bit of appreciation for quite how incredible what we’ve done up to this point is.

I don’t think we should get too caught up in the fee.
He will be taking up a squad place and potentially holding back a different player from getting game time and developing.
I don’t think it is a case of yes for £18m but no for £22m.

Which player do we currently have who he would be taking game time away from? I think we should absolutely consider the fee with Grealish. Especially as he will only be a squad player, as you stated.

I think Grealish will add strength in depth. That's what we're lacking at the moment. I think we will struggle if Eriksen gets injured for any length of time and I'm not sure any of our youth players are quite ready to step up to the furth team yet. Hopefully that will change soon rather than later!
That is true of all our players. One player plays, another doesn’t.
If we buy Grealish it has to be because he has the right amount of quality and right attitude. Not because of his price.

I think the point by itk is we don’t have money to spend.Yes, but we have nobody who is currently blocking his path as a back up player.
It's because we hope he has those qualities. However, player price is still a massive criteria for successful transfer or not. I wouldn't want to spend too much of our transfer kitty on a back up player, when we potentially have 1st team gaps.
the trouble is do we really have enough youth players that are on the brink of breaking into the 1st team squad?
the next 5-10 seasons are going to be very important in trying to win trophies, but more importantly at least finishing in the top 4. the more times we finish in the top 4 the quicker the stadium gets paid for. finish in the top 4 every season (at least) means we have an average chance of selling out at least 22 games a season. we can't take the chance with a youth player unless they definitely have enough about them to cope/succeed

It doesn’t sound like signing Grealish will stop us buying Martial or any other top targets, they are separate entities.

I didn’t say anything about youth players.
Any player bought will get playing time at the expense of another player.
If Grealish is the right player for us then I hope we buy him, within reason.
I don’t think we will know.Let's hope this is true, but we won't be able to judge it until our business is done.
apologies, I took the bolded part as taking a youth players place

I would also add, I hope he doesn't mind, Trix has contributed to the discussion but hasn't said any of his contacts have dismissed this, I personally find that positive.
All of these point to more than rumours in my humble opinion.
