same ownership though

Surely if this was such a great obstacle then it wouldn't even really be something we'd greatly pursue. I'm not saying it couldn't be as I don't know myself, but we must have some encouragement that it could still be done despite that fact. If the reports are true that is.

Increasingly encouraged on this but still a good few hurdles to overcome first.

However if we manage to not only secure his services but do so in which he can potentially play in either the Burnley or Utd game will be very impressive stuff from the club.

I would love to be wrong just don't see us spending north of £35mil on a player not guaranteed to play in the first 11.
I agree there is a need to have good backup in the event of VDV or Romero missing games but I wouldnt be surprised if we were looking in the £15-20 million bracket

If we got him in the summer I think it'd be a great coup, but to possibly get him in January, especially given Nice is having a strong season, would be something else.

The rotation players in their peak years that cost £15-20mil 3 years ago cost £35mil now, that's just the way it goes. Todibo on the other hand is more than good enough to start for a top team, so anything below £50mil would be great business. For that reason I think we're more likely to spend £40mill odd on him as a guaranteed entity than £30mil on say Drăgușin.

There should be no guarantees for anybody - it's most definitely a squad game, particularly when you are fighting on multiple fronts.

Todibo at £35m represents great business.

After the Chelsea match there was an analysis going around that showed that Romero has consistently missed 30-40% of matches throughout his career due to injury or suspension, and VdV's hamstring issue is not new and may well prove to be a recurring issue, as hamstrings often are.

If we bring in a third starting-quality CB who can play on either side, that player will get loads of matches, especially once we're back in Europe and need to rotate more regularly.

Surely the same sort of fee that we paid for the likes of Porro, VdV, and Johnson would be a worthwhile expenditure.

City have arguably 5 starting quality CB’s (Stones, Akanji, Gvardiol, Ake, Dias)

So I’m sure we can get away with 3.

There will be plenty of games to go around, as I’m pretty sure we will at least have conference league football next season.

I absolutely love that we are targeting him, yet more proof we are using an excellent data system to target players (allied with good scouting I would imagine).

That said, I still have major doubts as to whether we can actually get him. He is badly wanted not just by Man Utd but also by Liverpool.

Utd can offer him a guaranteed starting spot AND Nice are owned by Utd's new owner. That's where I expect him to end up. Liverpool can only offer a rotating spot with Konate but they are obviously a bigger draw than us.

If we do get him, it will be a superb coup by the club and a big statement. Signing a player who is potentially as good as our other 2 CBs and better than many of our rivals CBs, yet he wouldn't even be a guaranteed starter for us. Real statement of intent and if we do it early a true sign we are all in on backing Ange.

Oh and if anyone can convince him to sign, it's Ange!

I agree with your general point here but I wouldn't use City as too much of an example. Firstly they are a cheat code with their infinite money. Secondly they often play 3 CBs in their starting line up (Dias CB, Gvardiol or Ake LB, Stones and Stones/Akanji CB pushing up in to midfield). Sometimes they even play 4 CBs! So it's obviously very easy for them to give loads of game time to multiple CBs.

Where as with us, we only start 2 CBs. With europe and injuries (which we always get loads of!), I agree he'd get a lot of game time though.

I agree with most of your point, I just don't see us spending that much on a CB after spending reasonably big on VDV. I personally see the club looking at Kelly and Tosin as they are reasonably priced and homegrown

Maybe to me and you, but does it to the bean counters over at spurs HQ?
