old debate but a ref's view of events.

JEFF WINTER'S LEAGUE OF INJUSTICE - ARTICLE FIVE: CHELSEA v TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 24-9-09

Maybe it would have been, but we will never know!!

Looking at the basic facts, I believe that there should have been three penalties in the game for:

1) Carvalho’s foul on Keane.
2) Ashley Cole’s foul for jumping into Peter Crouch without even looking at the ball and
3) For the handball by Ekottu from Lampard’s free kick.

That is the way the alleged "big 4" win a lot of their games.

They take professionalism to a new level using every trick in the book and then some to play their game.

Sky Sports condones this behaviour, I recall a match 3-1 between Arsenal and Spurs in 2006 where every Arsenal goal was controversial one way or another.

Even last night the sky commentator was saying what a fantastic goal by Arshavin when the player was clearly yards offside. On the BBC webby they said is was offside but that Arsenal's play was so good they deserved it ! Crazy logic or what

I firmly believe referees are having too much influence.

The PL is a brand and has been sold around the world wth Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal as the big 4 teams. If you look around the world where the PL is sold these are the top 4 supported sides, because they are the most successful.

Sometimes I do wonder if officials influence games in a certain way to ensure these teams stay doing well in the PL and qualify to the CL. These teams get the lions share of bad decisions for them, maybe a few occasional ones that their managers make a massive fuss about to distract our suspicions.

I sound a bit mad but this is a money game now, and the larger markets like the Far East and USA are very very brand loyal, so if all of a sudden Man Utd and Chelski start playing badly and not winning games, they will lose interest most likely...ratings will drop and without the tv rights money the PL is in a spot of bother.

Just a theory...lol

It was 3-0 and yes, both penalties were never penalties and I *think* their other goal was offside but since that is a match I have wanted to forget, my memory is hazy.

If it carries on the way it is, with the Premier League pushing the top four around the world and offering not nearly as much coverage for the other 16 teams, i can see a case coming from a financial aspect - the Premier League is helping to promote four teams from the league and not offering the same opportunities for revenue or exposure to the media and, in the long term, causing the other clubs to be less able to compete against the top four because of the lack of exposure.

Citeh will be the next one, money talks and all that, which means they will have press coverage and be used by the EPL to further their own brand, which in turn will elevate their profile abroad.

Where we, and pretty much every other club in the league, have to do all of our own leg work when it comes to our overseas profile, there are four that basically have the actual league itself working to do that for them. Surely this is an unfair market when we're meant to be competing?

Lets be honest, i'd actually be happy to see a breakaway league formed from 16 clubs and let them four fight it out on their own - how much money would a round robin, 24 game total season generate? We can't compete with these big clubs both in the transfer market and financially (because they have the resources to borrow millions whereas we are forced to generate our own income, able to borrow much, much less) and the gap just gets wider and wider every single day and the topbrass at the FA and the Premier League are apparently happy for this to happen.

I don't believe the TV stations cover the big four games more than anyone else because there is some conspiracy, I believe they cover them because they feel there will be a larger audience watching, why? because the top 4 have a bigger supporter base than anyone else (more viewers) and they "generally" have better players who play better to watch football (more non supporters of that club will watch) add all this up and you have more viewers!

Don't know about you, but I love football, good football, and I like to watch good football teams on TV - I for one would rather watch Arsenal play Man U, than Stoke play Bolton!

Plus, I would have to say as a Spurs supporter, i think we do pretty well on the box, I would say at least 3/4 of our prem games seem to be on TV these days?

I have thought about this but I would be interested to know how many supporters - or even better, Sky Sports subscribers - of the big 4 there are compared to the combined total of supporters/subscribers of all the other teams in the league. Surely the other 16 teams would have more meaning a larger audience?

Good post mate. And this is where I have so much respect for Mr Daniel Levy. We are not in that bracket or have that following, but the club is run so well that we have been able to spend very well in the market. You look at the financial performance of the club and its amazing and thats without CL football. I think alot more people need to realise this and see that without Levy and what he has done here we would still be in dark ages with Gerry Francis and George Graham and the mediocre crap they bought!

Also I agree that Sky's coverage is fair, but thats just for us, I don't know what they show over the Far East, Im sure its not the same as here as Sunderland v Burnley would get a massive 15 views over there I think!

The most annoying thing is these Man U v Chelski etc games are so bloody boring and rubbish! I remember the awesome games we have had with WHAM, City and Blackburn all on Sky.

Don't know how this turned into a media thread - it was about refereeing bias not media bias FFS Eek

I said this earlier in the season after my article about video replays and (just as importantly) retrospective punishment - don't slag off the idea and then come on here bemoaning dreadful decisions again and again :evil:

I going to bounce it now actually :) Even more so after all of the diving talk of the last month or so. One simple way to stop it. Ban them for a lot of games e.g 5 or 6. Video replays to correct it within game IF they're still brave enough to do it
