Robbie and Gus commenting on the much debated qualities of JJ. Great quote from Robbie about not many people seeing how important his role is - sums up 95% off those on this site (thats all the JJ bashers then!).

MORE THAN GOALS (official site)

Robbie Keane insists there is so much more to Jermaine Jenas’ game than scoring goals from midfield.
The striker agreed that there appeared to be a perception that JJ is only playing well when he’s finding the net – just as he did twice last time out against Wigan.

“He’s got great energy and does a lot for the team, things maybe people can’t see,” said Robbie.

“His work rate and break-up play sometimes goes unnoticed. Perhaps the perception is that he’s playing well when he’s scoring goals but I think he’s underestimated.

“You have to look at the bigger picture rather than just the goals, the work he does for the team by stopping the opposition playing. You know he scores goals – he got 10 last season, and that’s brilliant for a midfielder. He does so much more as well.”

First team coach Gus Poyet agrees. “We’re not asking JJ to score goals like a striker. Strikers know you will look at the stats and say ‘why’s he scoring or not’ but first he has to be a midfielder, control the game offensively and defensively, be strong without the ball, brave on the ball and if you can add a few goals, great.”

According to Chris Houghton, last season JJ's Pro Zone stats showed he ran further than anyone else in the Prem. But, Mark Hughes did say the same about MGP, so someone has to be lying (or wrong). Unless they meant MGP ran the furthest in total and JJ averaged the furthest per game.

Strangely, Mclown reckons Peter Crouch runs the furthest for England. Which is odd for a striker.

That has to be bullshit. I suspect that is just McClown's opionion rather than a Pro Zonoe stat. The players that run the furthest will either be FBs, the odd hard working winger or box to box CMs. These are the players whose job it is to get up and down the pitch. Crouch might work hard, but he just won't get the opportunity to run as much as an attacking full back etc. No matter how hard a striker runs the channels (which I don't think Crouch does that much), it can't compare with getting up and down the pitch for 90 mins. I'd imagine Kuyt runs the furthest of the Prem strikers and suspect his stats will be average compared to a box to box CM.

no. He's not.
Berbatov is 'quality'.
Holidays to the Carribean are 'quality'.
The Queens breakfast is 'quality'.

Jenas is REALLY REALLY not up there.

One good game in about 18, and everybody loves Jenas.
I. DONT. GEDDIT.

Cynicism 1 Optimism ?

Pre-sale maximise +ve(ish) media coverage, while limiting credulity

Cynicism 2 Realism?

Staff assesment: candidate suffers from significant lack of confidence. Will magnify already significant deficits in composure left unchecked. Ostensibly a child, subject reponds well to +ve parenting, particularily male father figures. Grandiose at times, a fan of his own press, media overtures may prove beneficial in short term. However, these will likely contribute to further complacency and deluded cry's for selection in the nations posturing elite. Recomendation: In the absence of child minding, cotton wool and promote profile with media coverage. Sell.

I'd have thought the same, but amazingly the Flying Lamp-Post covered more ground than anyone else but Lampard last night.

I think most people will agree (even JEnas's biggest crictics) that he has the ability and tools to be a top CM, the problem is he rarely produces top performances.

The best coaches seem to bring the best out of their players, help the forfill their potential and even perform above their station.
If Ramos proves to be the quality coach we all hope/expect he will be then he could well bring Jenas's game to a higher level (unless of course he decides to go in another direction with his/our CM)

i appreciate JJ has a great engine, however he is a premiership central midfielder ffs, that is the minimum requirement. that simple fact seems to be something people forget. fitness and a 'great engine' should come as standard in the prem.

as everyone always says, he has great ability and potential, however he will have blinders against derby, wigan, sunderland, birmingham etc at HOME, not against the big boys or tough away games.

he needs to step up to the plate and become more consistent, how some people cannot see how inconsistant and frustrating he is to watch is beyond me.

like i say, his quality has never been in doubt, just consistency and doing it when it really matters.
