It's actually a really informative piece.

Lots of good points and tells it from the players' perspective. I especially liked this bit:

"And the sad thing about the transfer window is that the player who kicks up the biggest fuss will be the one that gets their move. If Berahino says he's injured and refuses to play, West Brom have little option but to sell him. But if Stones stays professional and carries on playing well, Everton will be delighted to keep him - and he may miss out on his big move."

Players get a bad sendoff for being unprofessional but the reality is if they don't then they don;t get their move.

It makes total sense to close the window a few days before the season starts.

To me it's only a matter of time before this happens. Given the financial clout of the premiership other leagues would adapt easily

A good article.

We often forget that players do view it as a career, and that overrides everything, even if they do care about the club. They want to move to the most prestigious club possible, for the most money possible, and with the best possible chance of winning trophies.

It really is fair enough. If a player loses his way at Spurs then we want him out. The good of the club comes first. It's vice versa for them. If one of the biggest clubs in the world comes in for them then they will do all within their power to get a move.

All considered, it would be tremendously helpful to move the deadline back to the end of July. Clubs would still be able to get their business done, and we wouldn't have to put up with the tiresome charade of players refusing to play and dealing with a half-baked squad for the opening games because chairmen want to save money on late deals.

If bad injuries happen then potentially a loan window in January (and possibly even in August) could be a solution.

It's only too long for club like us that fail time and again to get business done early. We would gain a huge amount from window shutting At start of season

Good informative and a honest piece of writing.

I wasnt happy with what he had to say about the Lennon situation.

No one will be surprised with what he explained about the Berbatov story.

In addition I was happy we didn't sanction the Modric to Chelsea move.

It's swings and roundabouts, player power verses club power.

Good article.

Would make perfect sense to close the window before the season starts. It's getting really tedious having players go on strike or claim their 'heads aren't right' when the season is underway. It's turning into a pantomime and serves no purpose.

It is, it's crap! You either scrap it altogether or you have a summer window which starts 24hrs after the season finishes and closes 24hrs before a new one starts!

I agree with most of the posts above.

It's very clearly and competently written, but it doesn't read as if it's been ghost-written - not enough journo-clichés. I expect that it's been sub-edited, of course, but it doesn't read as if it's a transcribed interview either. I think Jenas can write a clear, frank article himself, which suggests that he has a future as a straight-talking columnist, as well as a television pundit. He's always been a relatively articulate footballer, so it's not a great surprise.

Agree that its an interesting perspective in the article. Obviously I hate it when our best players leave, but there is a pecking order in the world of football and it would be silly to try and deny it. And frankly, if I had anything like the same level of restriction on my own career that we expect players to routinely accept in theirs I would be outraged. Imagine if you had to ask your boss for permission to resign and go to work for another company....most of us would not accept that for one minute.

The last point in the article is the most important one however....yes the window probably does need to be shorter but it won't be an easy system to change - you have a number of other leagues to co-ordinate who have their own different dates and schedules....

But then not many of us are earning that sort of money. It's a whole different World for footballers earning £30,000+ p/w.

Interesting to read the thoughts of a player who has been in that position of leaving a club on deadline day.

Plus still got BIG love for JJ because of that 135th minute equaliser against the Goonies in 2007

But the money itself isn't the only factor.

If a player gets a chance to play for Real Madrid then they are likely to see this as getting a chance to play at the very top for one of the most glamorous clubs in the world.

If they don't get their move then the opportunity could be truly gone forever. I can understand why players get really frustrated when it looks like their chance is slipping them by or negotiations are taking so long they won't get a pre-season.
