Newcastle United boss Joe Kinnear is being treated in hospital after falling ill. The north-east club said Kinnear, who suffered a heart attack as Wimbledon manager in 1999 and temporarily quit football, was admitted "as a precautionary measure" and will miss Saturday afternoon's Premier League game at West Bromwich Albion. Was only a matter of time tbh..

It's probably just as well he's missing the game. There has been 3 goals scored in the first 9 minutes! There should be plenty more in this game.

Hope it's nothing serious. Great player for us in the past, will always think fondly of him.

I have the impression he's not well liked in the corridors of Spurs. Is there some bad blood there?

He does seem to like slagging us of when he gets the chance.

Perhaps Keegan will return to Newcastle as manager again:rofl:

Didn't he say we're a small club blah blah blah when we were allegedly sniffing around N'Zogbia sometime ago? I don't know if that was the root of any dislike of the man or if it came earlier.

Personally I don't dislike him at all.

I think it's possibly to do with the way we handled transfers back when he was manager of Wimbledon.

Wasn't there something recently where he tried to get the job but it went to Gross ?

I'm sure it goes back even before then. Maybe Cosmic can enlighten us.

Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear is to remain in hospital under observation for a couple of days

Kinnear went to hospital after feeling unwell before the 3-2 win at West Brom, but he has undergone tests and is "okay" according to a club spokesman.

The spokesman added: "He will remain in hospital for observation for a couple of days and will then be discharged."

The 62-year-old Kinnear, who suffered a mild heart attack in March 1999, took over as Magpies boss in September 2008.

The former Spurs and Republic of Ireland defender was admitted to hospital on Saturday morning after complaining of high blood pressure, but was kept informed of events at the Hawthorns by his grandson.

"I would like to thank everyone who has been asking how I have been feeling," said Kinnear, who has been visited in hospital by first-team coach Hughton and Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias.

"Joe was in good spirits and had been listening to the game all afternoon," said Llambias. "And in typical Joe fashion, he was more concerned about the team's win than himself.

"He was nice and relaxed and hopefully will be back home in a couple of days."

I remember watching him and Cyril Knowles regularly in the early seventies until 1975 when both moved on

Bought his autobiography a few years ago - a good read

In a word, attitude. It doesn't really go back that far as it was not getting the manager's job at the Lane that really angered him as he thought he would be ideal and he is still bitter about it I think.

I haven't seen him since his playing days at the Lane, when I used to bump into him and Mike England in clubs and pubs and I once went to a party with him after he'd asked me out a few times and I'd refused. Never again though - I really didn't like him as a person.

He was always cocky and arrogant as a youngster, but you have to admit he was a damned good defender.

He certainly was. Not much got past him or Cyril (although I shudder to think how many cards those two would pick up these days).

Kinnear set for heart operation

Source: BBC 09:43 GMT, Wed 11 Feb

Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear is set to undergo heart bypass surgery, BBC Sport understands.

Kinnear, 62, has a history of heart trouble and was taken ill before Newcastle's match at West Brom last Saturday, which the Magpies won 3-2.

He had a heart attack 10 years ago while manager of Wimbledon and spent several years out of football.

Kinnear, who had hoped to leave hospital on Tuesday, will now have surgery on Friday.

After being taken ill last weekend, Kinnear was expecting to be back at work in time for the visit of Everton on 22 February but he could now be off for the rest of the season.

Chris Hughton, Kinnear's assistant, took charge of the team on Saturday and will continue to do so in his absence.

Earlier this month Kinnear delayed signing a contract extension, revealing he had been offered an improved two-year deal to stay at St James's Park.

Kinnear took over as Magpies boss in September 2008, replacing Kevin Keegan.

He originally arrived as an interim manager and his current deal ends at the end of the season.

I wouldn't read too much into his attitude as to whether he likes Spurs or not, he just has a combative manner as evidenced by his first press conference at Newcastle, he will front it up for his club whoever's nose he puts out of joint.(should that be whosever nose?)

Looks like he's gone for good now, after Heart surgery Newcastle are not going to offer him the job permanently and it doesn't sound like he'll be back much before the end of the season; shame but I reckon retirement is his future now.

The most rediculous booking I ever saw was given to him, he was wide on the right level with the opposition's 18 yard line, he may have put in a cross I believe, the ball came flying back out just above head height and because we were chasing the game he ran forward jumped and caugh it to take the throw in quickly, he was a couple of feet behind the line off the pitch and the Ref booked him. This was nearly 40 years ago, just goes to show that there never was a golden age of refereeing they've always been tossers.

He may not be my favourite person, but I do hope the by-pass op goes ok.

Football management is one of the most stressful occupations insurance-wise I believe so it wasn't really a good idea for him to take it on again.

I like Joe Kinnear I wanted him to be our manager when he was doing well at Wimbledon.
