Joe Martin made a Championship debut for Blackpool yesterday as they escaped the drop. I gleaned this from a fansite:

On the other wing Martin had an impressive debut - he has good ball control and also looks strong in the air. Twice he rose in the area to win crosses and took them cleanly. The first was headed down into the middle of the area, hoping for the ball to bounce up invitingly for an attacker, but it clipped a defender's leg. The second one was headed for goal, on target but easy for the keeper. Several times Martin won the ball well on the ground, but then seemed uncertain what to do with it - possibly because he has never played in this team before, but this was his only obvious weakness.

I was unsure about this loan. Joe had looked promising as an Academy lad, but had lost ground as a result of injury, and had not been shining in the reserves, mostly playing out of position at leftback. So I did wonder why a Championship side would want him on loan. I thought maybe it was trial with a view to taking him on as a reserve. Anyway they threw him in for the most important match of the season and he seems to have done okay, so maybe he still has a future at the Lane.

Could be another one of our long line of youth team/reserve players destined to ply thier trade in the lower divisions.

Almost inevitably, but I suppose it is encouraging that most of our recent discards seem to be building careers at Championship and League One level rather than, as used to be the pattern, in League Two or the Conference!

He scored for Blackpool reserves a couple of weeks ago and there was talk about him making his debut in the penultimate game - he ended up as an unused sub for that one. The fact that he was brought in for his debut on the last day of the season when Blackpool needed a result to be sure of beating the drop shows how much of an impact he must have had on the training ground.

I suppose on percentage terms, one breakthrough a season is what most top level academies would be aspiring to.

The next one really ought to be a Taraabt or Archibald-Henville. I reckon the use of loans to other Premiership / Championship sides is also going to be the way forward.
