Apparantly we have bid 10.5!!! but its according to the NOTW

Tottenham have launched a £10.5million bid for Argentina superstar Juan Roman Riquelme. The North Londoners have contacted Villareal in a bid to snatch the 29-year-old midfield wizard. Spurs boss Martin Jol desperately needs some inspiration in midfield and Riquelme could be precisely the type Spurs need.

It would be an astonishing capture for Tottenham who have struggled at the start of the season and would take their overall summer spending to over £50m. But although Spurs are very close to a deal with Villareal they would then have to agree terms with the Argentina man. A Tottenham source said: “It all depends on what the player decides to do as a deal with Villareal is very close to being completed.” Riquelme spent the last six months of last season on loan at Boca Juniors after falling out with Villareal boss Manuel Pellegrini.

He was instrumental in Villareal’s surge to the Champions League semi-final in 2006 when they lost to Arsenal – but his career there had been dogged by his feud with the boss. Riquelme who plays in the centre of the park or as an inside left would add much-needed nous to Spurs’ game. And the signing of one of the stars of the last World Cup would go a long way to appeasing the fans already seething after Tottenham lost their first two games in the League.

Now we're talking!!

Would prefer VDV for the same sort of price tag. JRR was a great player a few years back after being a total flop at Barca. He would command huge wages and he obviously has an attitude problem, doesn't sound much of a team player to me.

You're still talking about one of the best playmakers in the world. This guy is immense. I've watched him when he was at Boca a few times, and he was immense for them. Won them the Copa Libertadores on his own, scoring 3 goals in the final (two games). He's so good: making play, passing, creativity, free-kicks, scoring goals, long distance shooting... If this one comes off, I would be over the moon. But have my doubts he will come to us tbh.

Are you kidding Gambler? JRR would be the missing link in our team. Yes, he would probably need some time to get going, just like Tevez and Mascherano, but he would be our best signing for years (bar Berbatov, maybe).

Our strikers would really credit from his servbice and our midfield would actually get more protected because he could held the ball. That`s my thoughts and I know not everyone would agree but isn`t that the idea with this forum :)

I really hope there is some truth in thiss rumour

Isn't the Hudd meant to be the 'next' Riquelme?

Why not concentrate on developing the Hudd first? He's already adapted to the game and is much younger.

Hudd isn't exactly the paciest is he? Andrea Pirlo, probably the only one i can come up with who's a better midfield-playmaker than Riquelme, hasn't got too much pace. Are you suggesting you would also reject Pirlo at the lane? Pretty sure we would have created alot more chances against everton and Sunderland with Riquelme in our team.

Spurs already got 10 - yes ten - CMF (Zokora, Tainio, Huddlestone, Jenas, Taarabt, O'Hara, Malbranque, Ghaly, Prince, Murphy ) at the club and you guys are crying out for yet another CMF...
Riqulelme has fallen out with two Spanish clubs, i.e. Barca and Villareal. At Barca simply because he thought himself too good to be subbed and doing the "hard" work. At Villareal they used to accomdate his huge ego.
The guys got talent, no doubt; but so did Delmat. And why aren't the big continenta clubs lining up to sign him? Hmm...must be something wrong, "somewhere".
The guy hard EVER defend/"rolls up" his sleeves; and unless he's got at least one man to do the dirty work for him he can't function.
Most fans complain about the lack of guts in JJ and Zokora....well, then wait until you see Riquelme "defend"...
No gracias.

Riquelme is not like Dalmat. He is one of the best players in the world, and would be the most talented player in a spurs jersey for a vey, very long time. However, the chance of him joining is slim to none, and with our left sided problems it shouldnt be a priority either.
But, not to recognise that hes one of the greatest players in the world is just insane...

So why none of the continental top-clubs are lining up to sign him then? Why don't the best coaches and scouting system recognise him as "the" man to take their club to the very top?
Simply because of his character. Dalmat was an exceptional talent but his character also spoiled him - though Riquleme no doubt reached "further".
Whoever play alongside him in CMF will have to do the defensive work for two.
No gracias.

Good post. Completely agree re. prioritising left sided midfield and the actual possibility of him coming. Also baffles me when spurs fans reject players like Riquelme. I saw on here the other day someone rejecting Arteta as a player that we should target; and I thought that was ludicrous.

Because most top clubs prefer to play boring, ulta-organized football. And because you have to accomodate your team around riquelme if you play him. He's like Juninho at Lyon. And look what success he bought to that club.

Ask Barca why they loaned him out for 2 seasons and why Villareal was one the few takers for him.
Bellamy and Diouf are both also very talented player; but would you like to have trouble they bring along with them at Spurs?

I love Riquelme as a player but tbh i dont think he is suited to the prem like Veron before him. He is a world class play maker but i think spain or italy is perfect for him, a slower tempo to their matches. i would prefer VdV as he is left footed, great playmaker, puts himself about and is a great leader on the pitch, does struggle with injury though

Van Der Vaart is posing in a Valencia-shirt on the cover of a Spanish magazine, not something the Hamburg board will like. Just to say, he very much a Valencia player in his mind and also stated he will join them.
