LEDLEY King believes that Younes Kaboul can become "one of the great defenders" if he is nurtured properly on his return to White Hart Lane.

King is well acquainted with Spurs' £8million centre-back, who made 29 appearances for the Lilywhites in the 2007/08 campaign before leaving for Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth.

The 24-year-old followed the manager back to Tottenham on Saturday, and King has vowed to help his junior colleague to finally fulfill his potential.

"He's very good, a good lad and a great athlete," said King. "He's young and, as young players do, they make mistakes, especially in defence. It's down to us as a team to nurture his talent because he's a fantastic talent. We've got to give him confidence because he can be one of the great defenders around if he works hard and improves. It's down to us to get that out of him.

"Woody [Woodgate] and myself have played in the league for a long time and as experienced players we try to help the younger players. Kaboul, I've spent time with him before and we spoke about him becoming a better player and concentrating.

"If he can put everything together and work hard then there's no doubt he's going to be another great player. I'm sure that's going to happen because defenders don't reach their peak until they're a little bit older.

"I've seen him this season and he has done well. Maybe the responsibility of the situation at Portsmouth has helped him to develop as a player. He's always had the talent, we all saw that first-hand. It's about keeping him confident and giving him belief and then he'll do the business."

King and Kaboul could both be involved on Saturday against Aston Villa, who will be intent on overturning the narrow two-point gap to Tottenham in the ongoing race for a top-four finish.

"All the games have got a big feel at the moment, but they're a good team and a team that are trying to make the top four, like ourselves," King added. "It's going to be a good game, they're dangerous away from home and we're expecting a tough test.

"As soon as you drop points there are team waiting to take your spot. Last week Liverpool and Villa dropped points in midweek, and we got the win [against Fulham]. On Saturday it was the other way around. I expect it to go like that until the end of the season, it's whoever remains the most consistent that will grab the fourth place.

"It's nice to have something to play for. In my time Tottenham have never really competed for much in the league and it's nice to have something to play for throughout, right to the end of the season and to the last game. That's how it's going to be this season, I'm sure it's going to go all the way to the last game and that keeps everyone on their toes.

I think he has all the ingredients to be the player King is talking about, but he does have lapses in concentration which, as a defender, usually end up as goals. Lets hope he can fulfill the potential! Then we could have "King Kaboul"!

I think we should all take a leaf out of Kings book and support a Spurs player no matter what starting with myself

Welcome home Mr Kaboul, now show us what you can do!!!!

I love how some people think Kaboul has lapses in judgment and Dawson should be considered for the England team yet he has the same type of lapses in focus that really scare me.

Personally I don't think Kaboul is anything other than cover in case of injuries and would rather have Dawson playing than Kaboul but funny how they have the same sort of problem(Kaboul's is probably more pronounced) yet Kaboul gets labeled as a unfocused defender that will let goals in.

Anyway, don't crucify me as everyone else on here seems to love Dawson but for me I wish Woody was healthy and Bassong and Dawson could fit it out to see who makes the bench.

I wasn't that scared of Kabouls reading of the game, it was more his dallying on the ball and insistence on trying to bring the ball out of defence at all costs that scared me. As far as I'm aware that is one thing Dawson cannot be acccused of.

why is it when some fans try to big up a player, they put down one of our other players
Dawson vs Kaboul/Bassong
Keane vs Defoe
Crouch vs Pav
Jenas vs Thudd
and so on

Hopefully King or Woody can do for Kaboul what Naybet did for King when he came to Spurs.... King was always a good player but prone to a few mistakes which were eradicated after a season with Naybet... I think its a good signing you don't become French U21 captain if your not a good player and have a good character...

Although I have a sneaky feeling Kaboul will be utilised in CM more than we expect simply cos we didnt sign a CM and would he offer something else compared to the other CMs we have (apart from Palacious)

I think Kaboul will surprise some people and be utilized in DM and CB. He has great technique and ball control for a CB.

because our fans our twats

Lol whilst often true, It's also entirely possible fans compare players based on who they feel should start, or play or more often. Most fans when criticising a player, are often doing it to support an argument about a player who could/should be playing in their position. That's why Keane got so much shit, because regardless of the fact he's a club legend, people felt Crouchie was more deserving at the time.

But yeah, most of us are wankers. Including me.

Whilst his reading of the game may not be quite perfect he does have the pace to be able to get himself out of problem, abit like Sol has done in his career.

Just need to teach Younes when to hoof it and when to pick a pass. It was great seeing his marauding runs ala Zokora, but not so great when he lost it and left a huge gap at the back!

We might actually score from a few corners as well when Kaboul plays. He attacks the corner ball better than any of the others, and a contribution of 3 or 4 goals could make a big difference. Shame he is cup tied cos we are the famous Tottenham and we're going to Wem-ber-ley (Wem-ber-ley, Wem-ber-ley!)

I suspect Harry's favoured centre back pairing is going to be Dawson and Kaboul for the future.

One thing that can be said about that, is at least they are both young and fit :-D

Here's to a long and fit, solid and reliable back pairing, something every team needs.

Is anyone else thinking what I am thinking...? No, no, not the Swedish attractive twin convention, the whipped cream, and the chaps, but that the real reason Harry bought Kaboul back is that he is planning on going a bit sci-fi and finding an experimental doctor operating on the edges of science to transplant Ledley's brain into Younes' young, strapping, cartilage laden body? :hump:
