I'm also a big fan, tbh I wouldn't be surprised if we are quietly taking a look at him in case the move for Moutinho falls through.

Diego from Wolfsburg would be another alternative. According to reports, he fell out with his manager and Wolfsburg was looking to sell him. Athletico Madrid were interested but wouldn't meet Wolfsburg's asking price. Apparently, he is now back in the Wolfsburg team, but who knows.

Let me respond to a few previous posts briefly.

Firstly, as has been mentioned, he plays in a deep lying playmaker role for CSKA, as they have Dzagoev as their Van der Vaart. Honda plays in a much more advanced position for Japan's national team, and as such, has developed outstanding goal-scoring ability. However, he can still dictate games from the midfield, as he has good vision and very good passing skills. He also gives you the added bonus of being able to score at any time.

Secondly, there is very little risk in signing him, in my opinion. There is no question in my mind that he is much better than any central midfielder we currently have on our squad, including Huddlestone, Jenas, Livermore, or anyone else we would replace Modric with internally. I also think he is miles better than Meireles, and is every bit as good as Moutinho, but is actually capable of giving us goals that Moutinho wouldn't. His free-kick ability alone is worth the price of his transfer fee.

Thirdly, he is the most popular football player in Japan. It would be a financial coup for us if we landed him. He and Kagawa being in the Prem would be a huge deal there, and it would result in serious jersey sales and potential advertising revenue that no other players would bring in for us. That's surely something that peak Levy's interest.

This is exactly the kind of signing we have been looking for. A guy who isn't obscenely expensive, slightly under the radar, but proven and capable of really helping us push on. The last time I felt like this and made repeated posts here on SC about a player like this was Pappiss Cisse.

If Moutinho doesn't happen, Honda is the next best choice. Honda, Adebayor, and Cesar would combined cost what Modric is being sold for.

Cesar

Walker Vertonghen Kaboul Ekotto
Sandro Honda
Sigurdsson Van der Vaart Bale
Adebayor
That team is very realistic and would have us challenging for top honors, in my opinion.

Would be a good addition. Don't think he'll command massive transfer fee nor six figure wages.

Keisuke Honda Would Turn Down Lazio - Report

CSKA Moscow midfielder Keisuke Honda put an end to speculation linking him with Lazio on Friday, saying that he would not accept an offer from the Italian team in comments to Japanese newspaper Nikkansports.
Lazio reportedly made an offer to buy Honda in January, but it was rejected by CSKA.
“If Lazio calls me, I won’t go,” Honda said.
The Japan international suggested that Lazio’s failure to qualify for the Champions League was a major factor.
Comparing the situation now with that in January, he said: “If you remember that moment, Lazio could have qualified for the Champions League. However, they didn’t manage it.”
“I was 25 in the first half of the year, now I’m 26. A lot has changed in half a year.”
CSKA bought Honda from Dutch club VVV Venlo in 2009 for a reported six million euros ($7.4 million), and he is under contract at the Russian side until December 2013.
He has 35 caps for Japan and has scored 12 goals for his country.

Doesn't bode well for Spurs should a bid be tabled.

I actually wouldn't be that discouraged by those comments regarding Lazio. They are a much smaller club than us financially, so without Champions League revenue, it may have been difficult for them to pay Honda the wages he's looking for.

I think the draw of joining Kagawa in the Premier League could tempt him. CSKA are off to a poor start in the Russian League and his contract is running down, which means we could probably get him for between 10-12 million pounds.

Honda would be a good shout, will add. Benega, Benat, Gotze, Dembele,Fernades,Defour,Cabaye, Wistel,Kovacic, Badelj, and a youngster that Thowig might know more about, and that is Draxler, the trouble is AVB seems to have his blinkers on and only wants or cant see past Moutinho.
