If villa go down I could see getting relegated from the championship, they are gutless at the moment

I know it sounds stupid even as I type, but they are a former European champion...only about 20 teams in europe have done that. Villa are a huge club in this country too with a ton of support.

And Nottingham Forest won it twice too.

Fact still remains that the job is career suicide. Crap squad, no money, disinterested chairman, unrealistic fanbase.

As per the other threads about the scousers, a team can't dine out on the line of "We won something 35 years ago" unfortunately.

See this is why I'm genuinely surprised Lerner can't find a buyer. I understand QPR, Cardiff, and Leicester were all undoubtedly considerably cheaper than whatever Lerner would be asking for Villa, but they have so much potential for reaping returns between their sizable fanbase and already having at least decent facilities.

I would imagine part of the issue is who he seemed to be courting for buyers.

Sounded like he was putting a fairly high valuation on the club (considering it's current state as opposed to historical).....Larry Ellison was one of the people the supposedly wanted to buy the club. Ellison certainly has the money (he is valued at $52.5 BILLION) to easily afford Villa at any price....but a guy like Ellison would want a club in London, he would be buying because of ego....and no matter how many trains Virgin run to Birmingham it just will never be London.

Think Lerner needs to drop his asking price a bit to pull in owners who just want to be in the PL as opposed to a team in London and in the PL.

All talk about Lerner not coming up with any cash makes me wonder where Villa's money goes? They don't buy anyone and have like 12 players where half of them are kids.

I think both clubs are a challenge...but they are both good jobs at clubs with decent levels of support. Ive met loads of people from europe that are fans of Villa and Forest. Both clubs are more known than you would think. I remember a Russian guy i worked alongside recently that was a Villa fan, he said all he knew growing up was Villa, forest and man u...

Oh of course, the obvious obstacles remain, but even so I would suspect he could find a buyer from somewhere who could see the profits. Cardiff and Leicester found someone, so I think if he were to offer a fair price someone would take it. He has to at some point realize that the losses would not be worth him holding out for a high valuation, especially if they become more and more likely to go down this season.

Remember those Villa fans who were saying the only difference between them and us was Gareth Bale? That prediction didn't work out too well for them.

Villa will benefit from this sacking I think, they have some decent players who might just need a clean slate under fresh management to stay up. I'd say Benteke will leave in the summer though, swap deal including Adebayor or has that ship sailed?

If I were them, the first thing I'd do is sell Benteke to spread out the investment through the rest of the squad. Get a decent left winger now that they've found a decent right-sided one, maybe a better attacking mid for the center, and get rid of Sanchez to bring in a decent defensive mid. Other than that, they're a team punching below their weight.

Wages

Bent was brought in a transfer that cost them up to £24m

They made £84m and spent £72m on wages. I think that pretty much explains everything

Oh god I totally remember that. Just had a good chuckle.

What the hell has happened to Benteke though? There was a time when his fee easily could've been in the 20-30 million pound range....

I don't doubt they have support due to their history, but so do Leeds still. You'd have to find a manager who agrees with that sentimentality and is prepared to work with what they've got.

Martin O'Neill really wrecked his CV trying to manage them to the next level, and he picked up a team in the same position as they are now from O'Leary - bottom half/relegation battle. O'Neill got, in order, 11th, 6th, 6th , 6th and league cup runners up. That should be seen as a fantastic achievement in light of how they had been previously, but he was constantly criticised by the fans and still on the edge of the sack, having to leave because he was told he needed to improve without investment.

I really can't see the job being appealing under that ownership and considering their 'big club' supporter base is so difficult to satisfy short of a miracle.

I said at the time Lambert shouldn't have left Norwich for Villa.

Villa had the 2nd highest wage bill compared to turnover in the league. They let 12 first team players leave at the end of their contract including the likes of Marlon Harwood and Chris Sutton. They'd overspent on transfers and wages for a long time and they needed to rectify this which would take several seasons.

Lambert tried bringing through younger players and has some success with the likes of Benteke and Delph but as a team he hasn't got them performing.

With the new TV deals and Lambert's period as one of extreme thrifyness they are probably financially a bit more stable.

I still think Lambert is a good manager even if he has to take some blame for Villa's poor form. Just think he needs to pick his next team a lot more intelligently.
