For this season...full-strength squad, maybe a few off the bench to give others a rest, or let the youngsters off the leash?

second string match practice, with the odd youngster thrown in. A couple of regular starters (Keane, King, Modric etc.) on the bench to bring on if we're in trouble.

all depends on who we are drawn against, home or away, and who we have avaliable.

wouldnt mind first team mostly with squad player or even some yougner players thrown in, just as long as we have a team capiable of getting the win

The question behind the question is, how confident do we feel about qualifying for a European competition through the league? Do we put all our eggs into that basket or put out the strongest (if not freshest) side in all competitions just in case?

depends if we're looking like a sack of shit in the league again and if that's our only route to europe

Sooo...if the senior players weren't cutting it in the league games, and a second-string team had got us to say, the semi-final, you'd then put those underperforming players into the cup game?

If we're firing on all cylinders and looking like challenging for CL, second string players. If we screw up the league again, go all out.

If we struggle in the League again like last year I can see a new manager in our future, such is the Tottenham way.

i think we should only do what the big 3 (excluding chelsea) with thier teams when we have won the uefa cup and are in champions league. Until then we should take the competition seriously.

Lets look at our current squad and lets assume Ramos plays a 4-2-3-1 formation for our first team, that leaves a second string of -
.........................................................Robinson....................................................
...........................................Dawson.....................Gunter....................................
Chimbonda...........................................................................................Gilberto
............................Huddlestone............................................O'Hara...................
Lennon..................................................................................................Steed
........................................Keane.....................Bent.........................................

Definitely a team good enough to progress to the latter stages of the F.A. and Carling Cups as well as a few games in the EUFA cup- obviously dependant on the opposition.

Chris Gunter has played CB for the Welsh team and is being groomed to play (FOR THEM)in that position in the future -yes he can also play RB and LB.

by all accounts gunter is looking good for this season, and yes mainly as a CB (considering our issues with that position)

stemark that is a quality side for a second string team!! future looks good for us.

i agree with others, depends on the opposition, against lower division teams play a mix of first teamers with young uns/second string, against prem teams play full strength

ffs. Are you lot simple?

We've got a squad, not a bloody team. We won't have 'first XI's. It isn't a matter of choosing players 'for the league cup'. Have you dumbasses not heard of injuries and suspensions, let alone bloody rest? And why are you thinking of the team for imaginary fixtures against opposition unspecified at a time unknown anyway?

Not a dig at you per se, chiv. There's plenty of this kind of drivel around. It's the same kind of bilge that leads people to write shite like 'why are we signing Bentley when we have Aaron Lennon?'

I'd say take it seriously. As it stands, we aren't yet a team who has consistently claimed a European spot through the league, so we need all possible routes to make sure we get into Europe every year. Depending on the opposition, we may not have to field in a full-strength side in every single cup match, and that's a chance to rest some big players.

bill every club has its best 11 players who will play the majority of games, and all big games (fitness permitting)

liverpool are the only team who come close to your idea of being a squad not 'a team', but even with them you know whose going to be playing in the big games (bar maybe 1-2 players)

So people are 100% correct in saying first xi or whatever they want as its what happens. I know who they mean, and im sure you can pick the 11 spurs players who will play at boro in a few weeks too!

I appreciate your point but I'll give you five hundred pounds sterling if your 'first eleven' plays more than 10 games together next season. Same goes for Bubble (bless him). It simply won't happen. Hence, it is a redundant way to look at the game. Especially now we can use 7 subs.

United and Chelsea also don't have an eleven. Or perhaps Hargreaves, Anderson, Tevez, Brown, Giggs, Anelka, Ballack, etc, are happy being 'squad players'.

To my mind, I think we've bought a squad rather than an 'eleven plus others'. it's a subtle difference but makes a lot of the willy waggling about formation and selection impossible.

Not that I wish to stifle debate, of course. :)
