Although I knew this was coming, I'm still gutted at this sad news.

It's been a privilege though to watch one of the greatest defenders the game has produced play in a Spurs shirt throughout his career. A true legend who has earned his place amongst the great players and legends of Spurs past.

Hope the club send Ledley out during the first home game of the season for the fans to show our appreciation to such a legend

Most clear-cut definition of the word legend you'll ever get. Thanks for all the memories King Ledley, it's been a privilege growing up with your performances. Depressing day though nevertheless..

A sad day indeed!

I still regarded King as one of the best centre backs in world football and if it wasn't for his wretched knee problems, this would have been a fact and his reputation Europe wide would hold no bounds.

A legend at the club who fought valiantly to play for the club he loves and whilst he had a few misdemeanors with the booze, it still takes nothing away from the fantastic player, leader and captain he was for this club through the good times and unfortunately mainly shit times.

The king is dead, long live the king!

This is the right decision, for Ledley's knees and for the squad. I think if Redknapp was still here King may have played on another season, but AVB may have said that he doesn't really see King figuring this season. Better to have Caulker taking his place in the squad.

As others have said, he was the best defender we've all seen and were it not for injuries he would have been so much more. What really sets King apart from the rest though is his class as a defender, playing with skill, grace and intelligence and embodying the style and philosophy that Spurs have always sought to embody.

No doubt John Terry was a great defender at his peak, but he was and still is a thug and a nasty person. King was a superior defender and a superior human being and would have easily taken his place in the England team.

Imagine a centre back pair of Ledley King and Rio Ferdinand. Would have been the best in world footballl.

I hope the testimonial money goes to charity though. It's a lovely way for the fans to pay tribute to the guy, buy I do think players getting £50-60k a week have no need for a last pay day like the old-timers used to.

Anyone got a contact email address for the club

Think we should email them and get them to send Ledley out before our first home game of the season so we can show our appreciation to such a legend.

Thanks for everything, Ledley. Means more to a bunch of grown men and women than it probably should but it does.

I love the man and this truly is a sad day for everyone involved with the club. I know whose name I'm getting on my back this season.

A true Legend. Not many one club players left in the game. Pleasure meeting the guy a couple of years back had time to talk no airs or graces with this guy. Deserves Testimonial coming to him.

Thanks for everything Ledders, over the years your name has been the first one we all looked for on the team sheet on match days. Just seeing the name Ledley King was enough to make us believe that we could compete with anyone, even through the dark days when there was no other hope.

Here's to the classiest player I've ever known.
