A new initiative has been launched by the Club to commemorate the contributions of every player to have ever represented us in a senior competitive fixture.

Launched today (Thursday 26 October), our Legacy Numbers initiative has seen every player in our history since our first recorded senior competitive game – an FA Cup tie with West Herts on 13 October, 1894 – assigned their own unique number, denoting their place in the history of Tottenham Hotspur.

If this is an elaborate ploy to obliterate our foray into the 1995 Intertoto Cup from the annals of our history, then I'm all for it.

If, as a by-product of that, it serves to piss Alan Pardew off, then I'm doubly for it, if a little sad for the likes of Chris Day.

Otherwise, though, I do like this.

I like the concept and the layout. I like that someone chose Steve Sedgley over Gary Lineker for 1989-90. I'm slightly taken aback by the fact that Arthur Rowe was once a young man (and mildly amused by the fact that Bill Nicholson seems never to have been young). I love the picture of Sandy Tait (69) - not a man to take lightly, I reckon.

But most of all, I like that Cameron Lancaster's 12 minutes against Wigan Athletic is afforded the same respect as Steve Perryman's 854 games. They both gave their all for this club, to the best of their ability, and played out what time they were allotted in the common cause of Tottenham Hotspur.

In my eyes at least, they both deserve a number and their place in our history.

And imagine how chuffed Simon Webster is. Three games for Spurs, long forgotten, even by those who saw him play. Yet tonight he's immortalised as the bloke who made his debut after Gary Mabbutt and before Alan Brazil.

Yeah, I like this.
