Lennon. I want to see a bit of Townsend and think he should be given more opportunities, but Lennon is the incumbent and I was happy with what I saw on Saturday. Lennon has done nothing wrong and a lot right for me. I think he's the better player.

If we play 4231 then we are going to need at least one of our attacking midfielders to do some defending and work for the team. Lennon tracks back very well and lets face it Walker needs some help.

I hope Townsend gets some opportunities but if I was to pick our strongest team Lennon gets in over Townsend.

I'd want Townsend to get a bit more game time especially as he did do well on loan at QPR but I think any of our players would have shone in that QPR team tbh.

I'd still go for Lennon to start though, if nothing else him and walker seem to have a partnership going on with Lennon able to help walker with defending a bit and the two being able to attack together.

Lennon is the better player for sure, still I went for Townsend as Lennon isn't going to improve anymore, and he still has no end product. Townsend there's a chance he could improve playing with better players

I think it's fairly tight, Lennon's work rate is a big plus but think Townsend offers more of a goal threat, and I also do like a wide player playing inside out, FBs providing the width and depth.

I think Townsend will be pushing him hard this season, that's if we don't get Willian/Lamela or whoever.

Play Townsend on the right and that's the end of crosses unless Walker makes them as he'll cut inside every time.

I'd actually be happy for us to stop aimlessly belting the ball into the box from out wide, and try and create some quality chances with our wide players coming infield and looking for the final pass.

Who created the winning goal, oh yes Lennon. His cross intercepted without which we would have drawn so people want to drop him.

So no width and easy to defend against you mean. All the opposition have to do is tuck in and there will be no way through, sorry width is required to stretch them and create the gaps for through passes to be made.

What happens off the ball is just as important as what happens on it.

We were looking the more likely side to grab a goal, even without the penalty i think we would have won. However, he should have created at least 2 or 3 more clear cut chances with good crosses in the first half and just fired it at no one. I like Lennon but Townsend deserves a shot against Tblisi and should get some Prem games this season.

You misunderstand me, I think I can appreciate the art of playing with width and depth and how it's important. I like wide players that play inside out, that can come inside and create chances/shoot/run in behind the full back (like Lennon did a few times) with FBs pushed on to provided your width and depth. It's not about them playing centrally, it's about them playing from wide and being able to go inside, in behind etc not just charging up the flank and belting it into the penalty box.

Lennon to start, Townsend to be eased in to the starting line up, see how he does and then make a decision.

Whilst Townsend might be great in the final third, his work rate could yet let him down, but I'm sure we'll soon find out.

Having said that, I'd quite like Townsend to start against Dinamo Tibsili.

I said it about Bale and I've been saying it about Townsend. We have a real talent there and he needs to be played. As I said in the CP match thread, we can play both in the absence of Bale. They can swap regularly to keep the fullbacks unsettled. I thought that Chadli wasn't all that bad for a debut but Siggy was poor again and offered no goal threat

I am fully behind AVB but I will say it once more: I do not know what Townsend has to do to get a game. He has pace, directness and technical ability. As I said about Bale that autumn before the injury to Benny and he 'emerged' (FFS) under Harry

Alan Shearer who knows more than we do and was a prolific Premier League and England centre forward says it is not the wingers job to pick a player out, but to play it into an area, it is the strikers job to get himself on the end of it. Previously we have never had anyone in the 6 yard box so attempting that pass instead of to Dembele I can understand, had he poked it home nobody would be saying a word now.

This early in the season it is a question of do you play the players together to get used to each other or do you start to rotate already. There is no right or wrong answer, perhaps it's a 60/30 sub situation.

You have to be able to cut inside or go outside otherwise you are predictable and easy to defend against. If Townsend plays on the right he can only cut in, you are not going to get a decent cross with his right foot. We are developing so that the midfield players arrive late in the box which again they can't do if your winger cuts in all the time.

He would therefore limit the goals we get from midfield. I think after one game to be talking about changing wingers is a little premature to put in mildly.
