I fear the worst for them tbh.

I do already but if it is Roy Keane heading their way.......

I posted this on the managerial merry go round thread...
Staggering blow for Newcastle fans...they love Rafa up there and I suspect he did all he could to stay. How he managed to consistently carve out respectable results and league positions within the limitations he was working under is testament to his managerial skills. Wherever he goes will be getting a quality manager. Good luck to the bloke(y)

Next Newcastle manager odds:

Garry Monk - 11/2
Eddie Howe - 7/1
Gennaro Gattuso - 10/1
Jose Mourinho - 12/1
Chris Hughton - 14/1
Patrick Viera - 16/1
Marcelo Bielsa - 20/1
David Moyes - 20/1
Arsene Wenger - 20/1

Any of those likely to be better than Rafa? Nah.

Gattuso or Wenger would've been hilarious though.

Unfortunately Newastle's next manager will be whoever Ashley is prepared to afford and back. So it'll be someone shite.

Ironically, if it happens, Chelsea are about to appoint Lampard imminently. They might live to regret that given the fact that Benitez managed them for a brief period in 2012-13 and won them the Europa League and they appoint too early. I'd say Rafa would be a better and less risky appointment than Lampard, especially if the transfer ban kicks in.

Gattuso would be fucking hilarious. Will probably be Monk. None of the others mentioned there make any sense for all kinds of reasons.

Newcastle have had just one finish higher than 10th in the last 13 seasons - they are a few clubs that are notably bigger than then but they are a big enough club that they should really be finishing in the top half every year IMO. That time period has included two relegations and zero trophies won. Those of you whinging about Levy should take a long hard look at them when wondering if the grass could be greener, as their teams under Keegan in the 90s and Robson in the early 00s were doing very similar things to what we've done in the league yet fell to pieces with years of poor leadership.

Their squad looks pretty weak at the moment and Benitez was IMO the only thing keeping them in the league. They have Arsenal on the opening day and then trips to WHL and Anfield all by gameweek 5 - good chance they will be in a real relegation scrap if they don't pull off some miracles by that point.

Rafa had a similar time there to Sarri though i.e. did a decent job but was almost universally hated by the fans for pretty much no reason at all. Chelsea need someone the fans like to ride out the transfer ban/post-Hazard period. I'm not saying that has to be Lampard necessarily, but it has to be someone who doesn't start off being hated already.

They are getting lampard so the fans back the manager rather than turning on him like sarri. They wouldn't have been happy with benitez.

Nah the fans don't like Benitez and they need someone who will keep them and the players sweet for the time being.

Levy has his haters but when you compare him to Ashley it really puts things into perspective, gotta feel sorry for the Toon fans

It wasn't for "no reason" they hated him, it was petty as hell but there was a reason. The Garcia ghost goal in the semi in 2005 and Liverpool and Chelsea seemingly playing each other ten times a season during that spell meant the clubs and especially Benitez and Mourinho hated each other's guts. That's why Chelsea fans will always hate Rafa.

That's why I said "pretty much no reason" not "no reason". i.e. there's a reason that they would give but it's a stupid one.

If its still Ashley in charge.

Newcastle fan I know is saying the new owners don' t want Benitez.

Weird that they wouldn't want him. He's the best manager they've had in ages and is loved by the fans. If it really is the potential new owners ousting him then that does seem like an odd way to start out unless they've got some absolutely unbelievable manager secretly lined up to replace him with.

Hughton has gotta be a good shout at that money.

No chance. Most likely the only reason he's on the list at all is because some lazy journo/bookie needed a few extra names to make up the numbers and an out of work former manager is just an obvious choice to stick in there.
