That seems to be the problem. He doesn't seem sure if he's an 8 or a 10.
Does seem bit of an unbalanced formation doesnt it. Cause Devine isnt playing as advanced as Whittaker on the right side, he's dropping deeper along with the other 2 CM's but thats leaving big gap then up to Hardie up front.

Read a couple of Argyle fans saying Devine scuffed the assist. It doesn’t look that way to me, looks like it is a proper quality ball

Alfie got a great review on the BBC website and got an assist for the first goal apparently.
Ashley Philips also played the full 90 minutes but was yellow carded (learning quickly off Cutie! 😊).
Great idea getting these 2 together at the same club, and both seem to be expected to have great futures.

[quote from BBC]
Foster handed debuts to two midfielders as both Adam Forshaw and Tottenham loanee Alfie Devine were given starts and both players produced excellent displays, providing impetus for the hosts.

Devine, 19, was recalled by Spurs from a successful loan spell with League One Port Vale and moved to Home Park, with Foster stating his excitement about working with a player he knows from the England age-grade set-up.

Foster's faith in Devine was rewarded on 31 minutes as he created Hardie's equaliser, reacting quickly to produce a pinpoint cross which Hardie swept into the net from six yards out.

Devine's influence on the game grew and his effort on the stroke of half-time was saved by Cardiff goalkeeper Ben Alnwick.

Blast from the past, thought he would be about 40 by now.

Few comments from their Message board PASOTI. Includes Ashley Phillips too:

Devine was the poorest of the 4 IMHO although second half he got better. Phillips looks a rock, although his error for the goal.

Phillips is immense IMO (arguably at fault for the goal though it shouldn't have come that far, still want Hazard to come off his line more for corners, especially when it's on the 6 yard line!). Forshaw I was impressed, composed, played well. Gyabi I think will grow into the way we play. Devine looked far better after he swapped his boots, think he could grow to be as good as Azaz once he bonds with those around him.

Devine grew into the game after a fairly anonymous start.

Of the four Philips looked the most self-assured. Good in the air, good on the ball. Will play in the Premier League.

Devine came in and out the game. Felt in the first half he moved into dead ends a few times, but he made the first. He looked more confident and impactful in the second half when we increased the tempo. I believe there is a blooming good player there, just needs a bit of time to bed down.

Despite the assist, I thought Devine had a poor game. I wasn't impressed by him at all.

I was chuffed to bits with all of them for differing reasons.
Phillips - Will be a colossus for us and the days of us being bullied are over.
Devine - Will be exactly that when he gets into Championship mode.

Unfair on Devine. After a nervy first half improved in the second half and looked promising. Makes such a difference not wearing yellow boots !

Phillips - Not as impressive as he was against Huddersfield but tremendous for his age. Very good on the ball too. He plays a LOT older than his years. Will 100% get senior international recognition in a few years. Devine - Poor first half but was dangerous in the second half and looked a threat in advanced positions.

Phillips - physically strong and very comfortable on the ball. I wasn't counting, but it did seem that he is the favoured outlet for Hazard. He put in an immense block towards the end at 2-1 ( I think!) and this was followed by a bit of a scramble with Hazard pulling off a terrific save. I may be wrong, but I think it was Phillips who passed for Hardie to burst down the left to set up Whittaker's decisive goal. Describe as a 'lightning break'!!! Well, it was!
It's easy why plenty of Spurs supporters want to see him starting for them. I'm sure it won't be long before he does.

Devine - seemed a little nervy to begin with, but grew into the game. A really positive run into the box and an excellent ball in for a neat finish from Hardie. Full of running.

Devine didn’t play brilliantly but me and my mates all agreed “ there’s definitely a player in there” lots of effort / energy and the assist for Hardie’s goal.

Phillips, if it wasn’t for Hardie would be my MOTM. The lad will play for Spurs and most likely for England. Phenomenal. And he’s only 18!!!!

Devine also showed well I thought - he struggled with the press first half but when they dropped off and he had more time he showed more of what he could do. Let's not forget it's a big step up for him, the Championsip is different gravy to league 1.

Swans had 72% possession, which I imagine made it difficult for Devine to make a huge impression.

Alfie Devine 6 - The 19-year-old loan signing from Tottenham made just his second Argyle appearance as one of the two attacking players behind Ryan Hardie in Argyle's 3-4-2-1 formation. He made a darting run to receive the initial short corner taken by Adam Forshaw which led to Morgan Whittaker's decisive goal. Devine touched the ball back to Forshaw and his cross into the box picked out the Pilgrims' top scorer, whose first-time finish was very precise.

What rating did Phillips get mate?
Ashley Phillips 7 - It is impressive how much of a physical presence that Phillips has about him at the age of just 18. After four successive starts for the Pilgrims since arriving on loan from Tottenham Hotspur it is already clear he is more than good enough to play at Championship level.
