MANCHESTER UNITED have made Luka Modric their No 1 summer transfer target.

The Red Devils are preparing a £25million bid for Tottenham's 24-year-old Croatian midfielder.
United boss Alex Ferguson sees Modric as a young Paul Scholes, an attacking midfielder and ball player who can make United tick.
Fergie was even full of praise for Modric in his programme notes ahead of their 3-1 home win over Spurs on Saturday.
Talking about the 5ft 8in player and other small talents in football he commented: "And I give you another wee man who'll be at Old Trafford this afternoon: Luka Modric, who is playing out of his skin at the moment."
Modric signed for Spurs from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008 after impressing for Croatia in the European Championships.
He signed a six-year contract after the clubs agreed a £16.5m fee.
Modric struggled early in his first season as he was played out of position by Juande Ramos as a deep-lying midfielder and also had knee trouble.
It was only when Harry Redknapp took over and pushed him further forward that his career at White Hart Lane took off.
His start to this season was curtailed by a broken leg in August but he returned in December and has been in great form during Spurs' push for a Champions League spot.
The move for Modric is bad news for Michael Carrick, who looks to have lost favour with Ferguson.
Carrick has only started one of the last five games after two poor performances against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Spurs boss Redknapp is a huge fan of Carrick and may insist on him being part of any Modric deal.

Personally I can't see this happening. I remember Modric talking about how him and Corluka had always hoped they would end up playing for the same club...well Ramos/Comolli saw to it that that happened, then we got Kranjcar too. I honestly think they enjoy working together at Tottenham, and this shouldn't be underestimated.

Had a look and couldn't find how many assists he has but the torygraph has him down as creating 39 chances, 3 more than Arshavin, and level, yes level, with Steeeeed. I think we need a thread debating who is the better out of those 2, o wait. Gibbs is going to be all over that stat like a rat up a drainpipe.

He's still fucking brilliant in my eyes, and no stat can measure the intelligence and guile he brings to the team.

He's going to improve...big time. Personally I'd want us to keep Bale over Modric, but we shouldn't need to be worrying about either. Clearly we are capable of competing..clearly we have ambition..more so than when Berbatov jumped ship.

Speaking of Berbatov..I'm really in two minds about him. He's exactly the type of striker we need..but he treated us and the club like shit by refusing to play before leaving, and basically being a complete cock. Look at Keane...that return didn't exactly work out great for all concerned.

One thing I would say about Modric...were he to go (and I really doubt it will happen) at least we have the perfect replacement in Kranjcar.

Let's just not sell any of our key players - how about that? How do Spurs ever expect to challenge for the league when they sell their best players?

Also, Modric's ability and influence on the game should not be measured on his goals/assists alone!

First the story is based on SAF talking about the dangers about playing Spurs, it's hardly his transfer plan.

If they are interested in the summer though which is plausible we need to reject any offer unless completely ludicrous. You can argue his merits all you like but few would argue that he isn't one of our better players and because of that we shouldn't be selling. We are two points away from our best ever Prem season, lets try and keep that team together and add a player or two and leave it at that.

If United buy either Modric Bale Dawson then serious questions need be asked about the ambition of the club... Where in the top 20 richest clubs in the world and make a profit unlike many other clubs so we should be looking to expand not sell off the crown jewels.
