Luke Young has announced his retirement from international football after rejecting the chance to replace Glen Johnson in the England squad for this weekend's game with Brazil.
The Aston Villa ace, who has only recently returned to action after injury and personal problems, was offered the chance to link up with the Three Lions for the glamour game with Brazil after Liverpool's Johnson

was forced to pull out of the squad due to injury.
However, Young

has snubbed the overture from manager Fabio Capello

and has decided to quit the international scene.
The 30-year-old has made the decision to quit England to focus on playing for Premier League outfit Villa.
The former Tottenham and Charlton defender won seven caps for England, with his last appearance coming against Argentina in 2005.
The loss of Johnson leaves England with Wes Brown

as the only recognised right-back in the squad for the game with Brazil.

I think he could've been a good backup. Definitely better defensively than Glen Johnson.

But no great loss. Johnson and Richards would be my RB choices for Seff Effrica anyway. But if Richards still can't get a game over Zabaleta I would've gone for Young.

Hasn't he had a lot going on in his private life lately, brother died or something like that? Wouldn't be surprised if he was looking at the bigger picture.

I am sure I saw him in Wimbledon the other day. Anyway people may laugh but he looked decent when he played for England a while back.

I think people are being a bit harsh, he has lost a family member recently and obviously didn't want the pressure.

He is a perfectly reasonable defender, I would have him in the team ahead of poxy Wes Brown. Unlike Carragher he isnt retiring in some kind of strop, he is choosing to say no when actually being asked to be in the squad not when nobody cares.

To be fair, i'd forgotten about his brother. He's not a bad player as such, just not exactly a massive miss for England

To be fair to him, he told Capello back in the spring that he didn't want to be considered anymore. Capello just decided to try and twist his arm to get in the squad for the Brazil match, but he stated no again. Don't think he was looking for the media attention. But anyway, I'd play him ahead of Richards on the last 18 months form, so he would have been my number 2 after Johnson. He is a loss for England, just one of those players that never really got recognised.
