Just on BT Sport now and no word of a lie, the ref has some sort of foam spray to mark out the distance of where he wants the free kick to be taken and where he wants the opposition to stand.

They've been using that for 2 or 3 seasons across north and south America. Don't know why it's never taken off in Europe. Saves any arguments.

How many arguments are there over where the wall is positioned? The ref counts this the distance, the players stand where he tells them to and the free kick gets taken. Simple.

If you're going to use foam spray to mark exactly where the wall needs to be, you may as well go the full whack and give the ref a measuring tape so that the players are exactly ten yards away from the ball.

I like the idea, the spray vanishes after a few minutes. Imagine it in an el clasico though, there'd be lines all over the place lol

Have you ever watched a game?
  • Ref marks out the distance
  • Wall lines up
  • Ref looks at the free kick taker
  • Wall encroaches two yards

It was invented and first used in Brazil (or maybe Argentina). Can we get a snarky comment for them too or is it just America? :p

Since then its spread over most of South America, including Copa Libertadores and the Mexican Premier League. MLS just recently jumped on board last season.

It's a great idea I think. They should double it up as a pepper spray just in case the ref needs to deal with Joey Barton.

Not the first to try it,but the first to implement it with good efficacy. Nice job MLS.

Must be closer to 10 years since I first saw them doing it in Brazil and/or the Libertadores , and i'd agree that it's really puzzling that they've not adopted its use over here.

It's a very good idea and should be implemented everytwhere.

How many arguments are there over where the wall is positioned? The ref counts this the distance, the players stand where he tells them to and the free kick gets taken. Simple.
.....then the wall shuffles forwards until it's eight or nine yards from the ball by the time the free kick is taken.

The ref spraying lines stops this. If the players in the wall encroach it's obvious and the free kick can be re-taken without controversy and/or players cautioned.

It's a great idea. It's a simple and effective way to stop one kind of cheating.
