For the return so far. I'm not saying he will definitely be the next Bale, but he still has the potential to be world class. Bale really struggled at first for us, even Modric looked shakey. He's a young lad with plenty to learn and all it takes is a few breakthrough games. Even then, he may never live up to being a £30m player, but what is these days? Money is distorted in football these days so you can't really use that as a baromoter for a player's real worth. He may not live up to what we presume is £30m standard but still be a very good player for us in time. I get your frustration at the way we have thrown around money in the past few years, but really we haven't got a lot of choice. We're priced out of the market a lot of the time and we really have to do something special to prise away a team's top player. That's why Chelsea and City get away with buying world class players for a bit less than that sometimes, because they have power that we don't.
Nonetheless, my point still stands about using every single thing Lamela does wrong as a stick to beat him with. We've got to get behind players, even if they were bought for obscene amounts or are paid obscene amounts. We all know how you feel after the first time you say it, if you keep banging on about it then you end up sounding bitter.
He hasn't played well today though, did some nice link up for Eriksen's goal but is struggling to get into the game, particularly when we're on the back foot. Sometimes that price tag can be a killer for the player too. Psychologically, players who are bought for over-inflated amounts are desperate to live up to that price mark so they over-do everything in order to do so. They know they will be scrutinised more heavily and that can damage your reputation, particularly if you're trying to fight to get into the national team. I think we see that a lot with Lamela. That's why I feel sorry for him and hope he succeeds (well, that and he's our player) more than being pissed off with him.
I cannot understand paying 30 million for "potential" as you put it. At Spurs a club with limited transfer funds you'd expect someone a little further on than potential WHOEVER that player was.
