If we decide to wait it out 'til the end of the season but Man. City want him off the wage bill in Jan, can they sell him from underneath us? Or do they have to wait to see if we offer the "14 million" quoted (and accept our bid even if others bid more)? It could get interesting.

They can't sell him to anyone else until the end of the season. We could decide to sign him permanently in January, meaning that both parties involved in the loan deal would have agreed to terminate it.

we probably have a first refusal as part of the option to buy...

For £10million we won't find a better or more suitable striker for our system than Adebayor so if that was the only criteria for a transfer then it's an absolute no-brainer.

Of course, the main stumbling block is looking to bring his salary in line with our top earners and this will be a test of Adebayors character whether he is truly willing to sacrifice tens of thousands a week to secure a move to us or seek pastures new and retain a similar remuneration.

Cheers Spurger King, that's pretty much what I thought, it was more the fact that is that if they want rid, could they sell him to any-one and give us compensation?

And as midoNdefoe said, do we actually have the 1st refusal?

But after thinking about it and looking at the calender, Man. City want the best part of 100k p/w off their wage bill, and from Jan to May is about 22/23 weeks (?) - which by my Math is 2.2/2.3 million? So why would they knock 4 million off? To save just about 2.5? Now there's good business sense haha.

If it's true, I'm guessing they might be missing a hand though, because Levy will surely bite it off! If we bought Ade and he "did a Mido" he's still worth 15 million....

Might not just be about the money, from his point of view it might be worth waiting til the end of the seson to see if we make CL

Perhaps your right but then, rightly or wrongly, it just seems to me that Adebayor wants to play football and be appreciated from his manager and fans alike which certainly seems apparent thus far with us.

I'm not naive enough to think wages won't be a factor as to sacrifice the levels of income he would have otherwise been receiving at City is significant but then he must be realistic that this was vastly inflated from the outset and that little if any prospective buyer would be prepared to match the outlay that City have.

Exactly this..

He's had a hand in a lot of the goals recently also. The pen against Newcastle, both against Blackburn (can't remember the 2nd specifically but remember the hold up play for the 1st to release Walker) and the first I think it was, against QPR, winning the header to flick it on to Lennon and then to Bale to score. They're just things that none of our other strikers would have done.

I'm excited for when he starts scoring again.

Err.......Pav?

Please sing him up. He may not be scoring atm but he adds so much more to our attacking play imo.

If we agreed a fee of £14m and they are prepared to sell for £10m then we can afford to pay ade £70k a week for 4 years plus £520k per year signing on fee which would effectively give him a weekly wage of £170k and we would still be close to 2m better off!!!

Sorry mate, your maths is out. The annual bonus would need to be £5.2m to give him the extra £100k per week.

Nice idea tho...

But he finally gives our attack a focal point, aerial threat, hold-up play, power, penetration etc. that we've been lacking for years - so much on top of goals. It doesn't matter if he isn't scoring if he's enabling vdV and Bale.

Im with Dan

I was told a while back (4-5 weeks ago) that it might even be a free transfer we are offered (or one of those undisclosed under £5m so not material and have to be fully disclose the fee to save face on Man City side) - We would then cut a wages deal pay off with Ade, which would be structured over the course of the deal. I did not take it seriously as I thought who would give away a £30m player for free even to free up wage bill !!! This came from an agent who worked on a number of deals with City including taking Bellamy there, so always a little sceptical with agent info, but might have legs.

The transfer fee on a player his age is much less relevant than his wages.

A transfer fee is an investment, wages are pure expenditure.

Think of it like a house.

Transfer fee = buying. If you can afford it you'd invest £1m on a new house as long as you thought it would increase or at least retain its value.

In fact the equation is the same if you spend £100k on a house or £100m, you do it if you think the investment works, but if for a moment you think the price is going to fall then you don't.

Wages = rent. You subtract your rent from your income and the equation is can I afford the rent and everything else I need because you know that at the end of the day whatever you spend is not coming back.

Weirdly the media and everyone else tend to focus on headline transfer fees (presumably because they're published and the large lump sum... er... grabs the headlines) but you can't know the true cost until the player moves on from the club.

Wages on the other hand make up a minimum of 80% of what a club spends on players. That's a massive majority of the cash a club spends on a player going on wages.

All of which is typically long-winded way for me to say that the transfer fee is almost irrelevant, it's all about the wages. And at £25m over five years (£25m you'll never get back) Ade is unaffordable.

£170k a week for 5 years is about £44m!!

We sold Crouchy, aged 30, for £10m.

We may be able to sign Ade, 27, for £10m.

If it's possible, and I think wages would be the issue, then it should be done on the above reasons alone.

I just can't see him taking a massive drop in salary, i'd love to sign him, and I do wonder if Daniel Levy could sort something with a siging on bonus, goal bous etc, but I just think it would be too big a deal to pull off.

If we'd expected to pay 14m but actually pay 10m surely giving him the other 4m would go someway to easing the pain of a lower wage . At least you'd bloody we'll hope it would
