Mata vs Willian

With the news that Jose wants to blast 60million on Willian being in the news, the discussion came up at work about who was better Mata or Willian.

One of the plastic Man U fans was ranting about Willian being better but from the stats, Mata is performing much more consistently.

So, SC who do you think is better?

Personally I'd say

Dead ball - Willian
Open play - Mata

Was going to go on and say that I'd prob go for Willian as he's younger but when I checked there's only 4 months difference in age and Mata is only 28 (must be the strain of playing for Utd that makes him look so much older).

I thought Mata was like 32 but he's the same age as me!

I'd say Willian is the better player as he works harder and has a better shot than Mata. Also alot better at dead ball deliverys. Mata however strikes me as slightly more creative with a better eye for a pass. But overall Willian tops it for me.

If you can afford to have one player whose job is just to stroll around and just be creative then Mata. If you need all players to work for the team all the time then Willian.

I think the game especially in England now makes it very difficult to accommodate a player like Mata. which is a shame as he is a player that I really like to watch. Maybe he needs to go back to Spain or go to PSG where he will have more time to show off his ability.

Mata is a curious one, he actually scores quite a lot of goals. He does however remind me of Berbatov, looks like he couldn't really give a shit and then does something magical. Sadly he seems to have lost the magic in the last year, so he's just left looking shit.

Willian, I think he's one of the most underrated players in the league.

I think there is a misconception that a player who works hard can't be as creative as a show pony. We think they need to be one or the other.
For me, Willian is just as creative/effective but adds more due to his team ethic. He also adds pace to the team which makes him/the team set up more flexible.

I'd have said the other way round.

Mata's a better free kick taker whereas Willian takes the game by the scruff of the neck more due to his high work rate. Both have technical prowess. Willian is definitely the more physical of the two whereas Mata may be the better thinker. I'd have said Willian is better. He's a better fit for Mourinho at least.

Willian is still worryingly loose in possession, making it hard to rely on him as a viable alternative for attacks. He often misreads shifting defenders and rolls the ball directly into the opposition’s feet. He also lacks the ability to consistently get by players one-on-one, which is as confounding as a peregrine falcon stalking prey using an upside down newspaper and Groucho glasses.

Willian’s most potent weapon—a first step quick enough to splice atoms—loses all its dynamism when he waits to use it until the ball has suffocated the blades of grass beneath it. Defenders, then, are given time to prepare a response while teammates try to feign a telepathic connection with an angled run, a decoy run, or by staying onside and just waiting.

Not surprisingly, each decision has an equally low success rate. As a result, attacks stall as Willian is crowded out or misread premonitions result in a goal kick, and blades of grass weep for family members sacrificed for naught.

Cheers for that. It's always interesting to see the views of those who are in a better position to critique. We know our players' flaws better than anyone else.

Every single player has flaws and weaknesses. Just depends on whether their weaknesses are relavant to their style or the team's style of play, and whether the weaknesses outweigh/negate the good things they do.

I still reckon Willian would be a good fit for Poch purely based on his dynamism and energy.

I tend to agree with this. You could probably accommodate both though, Mata's not too lazy these days I don't think.
