I just had a very interesting meeting at work with a guy who knows Mel very well. Now i only knew this guy through having him under my wing on Football Manager but for those who don't know he works as a scout for the club. He started doing some brief scouting for Oxford Utd and a stint at Watford and QPR where Holloway apparently raved about him!
For many years Mel was a local scout who's knowledge of the game was second to none, in more recent times Spurs started to send him off to all parts of the world scouting youngsters. However since we first employed the director of football role, he feared for his job. One day he was called in to a meeting with Arnesen, Jol and Levy where he thought that was it. Instead he was made into one of the lead scouts and now travels the world full time and has been the man who has found Taarabt, Berchiche etc.
From what this guy told me we currently have a number of players that are out at European clubs where passports etc are easier to come by for non EU's. He said we can expect a number of youngsters to be moving over the next few years who originate from all over the globe and that alot of Academy/Youth squad already is extremely talented.
The guy i was meeting with is a Hammer but claimed to be very envious of our set up from what Mel had spoke to him about, claiming we have some fantastic youngsters coming through.
I just thought it was quite refreshing not only on the youth front but how this guy had moved right up the ranks and now is moving the club on! Good times!
