i bet when Ramos finds out we did own him, he'll start crying, think he would have been his sort of player, never thought he was given a fair chance

If he isnt good enough for Pompey why would he be good enough for Spurs? Did thik he as decent when he was here though.

I watched Mendes on his debut in a pre-season friendly up at Hull. Even in his first game, he lloked quality - just a shame that he wasn't prepared to be a squad player, backing up Carrick.

Ah well - Doubt he'll want to come back here, doubt Pompey will want to sell him for anything less than a whole heap of notes and, to be honest, i'd aim higher. I don't think the club are interested in a stopgap player for a year - if they don't already have someone amongst our youth who they see stepping up, i'll guess they'll go elsewhere

Mendes, can be put in the same bracket as Zeigler. Players people seem to think were fantastic but couldn't get in team so were "Never given a chance" and when they did play were constantly whinged about.

If we are to move upwards, we need better than Mendes

I think it's about system. He's fits more into Ramos' style. I'm sure even Jol would have loved to have him back after the Carrick fiasco. So he would probably be a good player to have (back) at the Lane. Then again so would Muntari. :)

I think Mendes was very unlucky that CArrick never seemed to get injured (played 37 of our 40 games) and that we didn't play many games in total that season (just 40). The following season our back up CM was Huddlestone and he played 25 times. If Mendes had stayed he'd have probably been 1st choice for a majority of the season.

I always was a fan of Pedro da Silva, and could never understand why my fellow yids didn't rave about him as well. I would happily welcome him back, buy perhaps JR has the rep to attract even better players.

joey55,have you given up on huddlestone?

No, I've always said he's at least two years away. He can't be judged alongside other players as he has to make up ground in his head and learn to read situations like an experienced old pro ie Tugay. His mobility problems are magnified further when he plays with Zokora as he has to play higher up the pitch, where he can find less space and his lack of mobility becomes further exposed. Last season he was being compared to Hoddle, but then both TT and JJ were injured and he was paired with Zokora and it simply doesn't work for him. It happened again this season. He was doing well, but then played 3 dreadful games all alongside Zokora. I do think he may be finished at Spurs. But for a player with his talent it's too early to say write him off. If he can learn to read situations and nip into to intercept the ball, then he could be as good as there is, particualry in a 3 man CM. There have been calls for him to play in a 3 CM for us, but that is a very tactical formation, and very few players of his age are able to play that pivotal role. It's a postion where experience is key. The best recent examples of it in the Prem are Makelele, Hamman and Campo (wise old heads). Look at the best teams in Italy, the most tactical league in the word and you'll see the best sides are dominated by older players.

I think it's harsh to brand Mendes in the Ziegler and Routledge realm. There was a marked improvement in the midfield when he was there - and a lot of stuff went through him.

Those two """""""wingers""""""" drifted in and out of games more than Malbranque drifts from the touchlines. Mendes ran them.

But agreed, there is better - but I feel our midfield would not be deemed a crisis if he was still there as our Didi would not have been bought.

(Not saying Didi is the cause of our problems, just saying I liked El Pedro).
