What Webb did was tantamount to telling the Spurs boys, no matter what you do you wont win this game, not only with the penalty, but also the yellow cards.

Plus how could he be 100% sure it was a penalty, he was at least 40 yeards away.

We can't let this get us down too much, we've been great lately and I hope the lads use todays result to strengthen their mentality. I don't wan't to talk about the penalty because I feel sick just thinking about it and dwelling on it at this point won't change things. It's been a while since we took a beating like that but that's what Man U are capable of when they have their backs up against the wall, we've seen it time and time again.

I've seen more than enough to suggest that Harry can build a strong team and I think the players realise this too. We have played consistantly well recently (even in the games we have lost) so we should stay positive for the rest of the season and be grateful that we have a strong team and a strong manager. Things could be worse, just look at Newcastle!

edit:

I also want to point out that although the players mentality is not perfect, they have shown a lot of strength in the way that they have climbed up the league table so it's obviously not as bad as some people seem to think.

I agree, it looks a bad result from the outset but how many times have we been 2 up at Old Trafford? First half was good, second half was bad. We should have gone out treating it as if it was 0-0 and look to go forward, not sit back which is what we did

Oh well, I think its more the hope we had at 2-0 which is hurting right now. If we had been 5-0 at half time and it ended 5-2 people would probably be upbeat!

We're all hurting after todays game, but take the rose tints off and smell the roses. Yes, a bad decision went against us today and arguably cost us the game, but it's the second time it's happened in the last couple of months.

Palacios' sending off against Blackburn also turned the game, but the referee's can only take half the blame, our players must take the other half.

Bad decisions happen at every ground in the country, some have an affect, some don't and it's how you react to it that determines that.

The whole team lost their holds following the penalty today, Harry included. Yes it was a shocking decision, but we were still in the lead. If we would have had a better mentality today it may have been a different story.

As fans we need to think about what we're saying tonight as well, we'll look like fools if we put 100% blame on Howard Webb. We have a reputation of whinging as fans, yes we have some right too, but we shouldn't exempt the players our frustrations as I think they let us down equally as much as the ref.

That for me today sums up why we are not a top four Club. When decisions like that happen it goes one of two ways. You either use the decision to fuel your fire, or you feel sorry for yourselves, roll over and give up, unfortunately we did the latter!

Great post. SPOT ON

What was STUNNING is that each player morphed into Bentley style tackling after the pen: ignoring runners and just hovering around the guy with the ball ALLOWING them to get passes off.

They attacked Lennon and Modrics wings and just crossed for fun.

I have to admit as soon as soon as that poor excuse for a top referee gave a penalty I was fearing the worst. Man U are a top team there is no doubt, give them an assist and they will take full advantage.

Think i'll have to disagree. Firstly, the Palacios decision is totally different because we went down to ten men and that will obviously change the game no matter what. That was purely the ref's fault. With an extra man, it's always gonna be tougher and there's always more chance that the opposition will score.

Today, i blame the ref again. That was a terrible decision and swung the momentum Utd's way. We shouldn't have collapsed the way we did, but on the same lines, they were quality moves that lead to each goal (even if the finishes weren't all quality). The single reason Utd started to perform like that is down to the worst penalty decision i've seen for a long while. Yes, we should've kept our heads but like i said, the moves that lead to each goal were quality, it wasn't just us falling apart. After the 3rd went in, the momentum will swing even more with them, hence the quick 4th. We still didn't play too badly after that and Bent had a good strike that could've made it 4-3.

Utd were outstanding 2nd half. The only reason they were was because of that penalty decision.

And that ball wasn't fully over the line.

But given all that when Man U did get going with the help of the officials they did move the ball like a team worth 200 million. Hopefully we can continue to make use of the 50million we took from them.

I agree. At half time I thought that Utd would get back into it with some sort of dodgy decision, and a raft of 50-50 decisions going their way. That's what happened. It's happened before for example the Mendes goal, the Scholes handball in the cup game. United get the most outrageous decisions in their favour. Just give up guys, that game was lost from the start, and no matter what Spurs did in the second half, United would have won anyway.

I really don't know what it is with refs at OT but it's just astonishing the way this keeps happening.

It's funny, how so much can go Man U's way in a game!
We score at OT only to have the "Goal" disallowed because it was deemed to have not crossed the line, but it was 3 feet over the line, they have a goal allowed when it is impossible to see if it had crossed the line!
They get penalties awarded when they are behind in games, that would not be given to the opposition, 50-50 decisions are given to them, and when they have a player on a yellow he is allowed 2 more fouls before he gets a talking to from the refs, which is usually a sign for Fergy to substitute him!
I would not be surprised, that, in the not too distant future, the truth will come out about quite a few games that have gone Man U's way, just like they did at Juve............

While the pen was a disgrace. Our second half performance was even more of a disgrace, out of our back 4 only Ekotto decided to turn up after 45. Corluka got embarrassed by Rooney, Harry should have subbed him for Hutton as soon as he saw what Rooney was doing to him. King and Woody were invisible for the second half.
Our midfield needed to get the ball , stop Scholes and Carrick playing passes and take some pressure off our defence, both Jenas and Palacios weree great in the first half, the were piss weak in the 2nd. Our other 4 players didn't even come out of the dressing room after half time and last but not least, while making some tremendous saves Gomes was at fault for a couple of goals, keeping his howler to game ratio right up there.

lets be honest although we lost 5-2 in the end if it was not for that disgusting cheating scumbag of a ref we would of seen the game out and took all 3 points , no way would utd of scored 2 goals the way we were playing , the ref was a total disgrace and that ridiculous decision tore our teams confidence to bits , what happened after was a shambles and only 1 man is to blame and thats the mug in black, im fed up of this top 4 bias , something has to be done to stop shit like this happening again

not that hard to imagine. wenger uses all sorts of discomforting psychological tricks in the structure, colors, etc of the away dressing room in order to gain a tiny bit of advantage. i actually trust him far more than baconface to be honest.

I think yesterday encapsulated why it will be so hard for us to ever break into the big 4 -

their teams are better than us to begin with

but then you have a team like man u who repeatedly get 'the rub of the red' against us

it's not just concidence obviously

I don't think it's outright corruption on an individual basis, ie 'bribes' etc - tho you can't rule it out

I think it's institutionalised bias and corruption though for sure - it's simply easier to give decisions against us than man u and so such decisions are given on a fairly routine basis

I've been supporting Spurs for nearly 50 years and can't remember once us being given a big decision against man u

I could fill a page with the stuff they've got away with against us

that's not just coincidence

You only have to look at the various 4-4 games this season to see what a good mentality can bring you. We showed that type of mentality against Arsenal, I know it's slightly different because the decision was a bad one, but if we would have showed the same resiliance it may have been a completely different final score yesterday. We just gave up.

You make me sick quite frankly. You simply cant take the pain of knowing we have been screwed over thats all. Be a man and take it instead of coming up with these dross excuses. We all know we collapsed, but that was totally due to the pathetic decision given against us. We would have won without that penalty decision, we was in total control. Dont let that last 30 minutes overshadow the 60 minutes we totally ruled the game.

I accept we got screwed over and it did hurt, but in my opinion that can only be accountable for 50% of why we lost. Fact is we were still winning when that penalty went in.
