Both are different but I would choose Messi over Ronaldo. Messi is a team player and that is reflected in the stats. While their goal tally is pretty similar, Messi wins hands down on assists. If Ronaldo takes a free kick anywhere in the opponent's half, he is as likely to shoot even when it is unlikely he can score. Also Messi is younger so will probably still be playing when Ronaldo retires and unless he gets injured, should end his career with more goals.

Messi is the most talented player of his generation by some distance, but Ronaldo is (still) and incredible athlete and also a very gifted player. Messi in his prime was possibly the best of all time.

I have always felt Messi to be the most naturally gifted player of the two. Ronaldo has carved a wonderful career for himself by creating the player he is now whereas Messi is a pure instinct footballer.
So whilst I have the greatest respect for Ronaldo's dedication to improving his game I can only sit in awe as I watch the little magician weave his magic. The Argentinian was put on this Earth for one reason only and that was to play football. We shall not see his like again.
