I agree that Messi is better. I just think that for as much stick as Ronaldo gets for selfishness and being all about himself on the pitch, he's still managed double figures in assists on multiple seasons, despite generally seeing the ball a lot less than someone like Neymar or Messi.

Right, because like I say, he's still an excellent player, nobody is doubting that. But if he was less selfish he could be even better than that. Not sure I'd say he sees the ball any less than Messi though to be honest. Both of them have had the teams built around them for the past however many years.

It's always been Messi for me. I think i've become more objective on this over time as i used to dislike Ronaldo massively, irrespective of how good he was/is. i can respect his talent more now but i still think Messi is the greater talent. His movement, passing, finishing and dribbling are the best i've ever seen and his work ethic (for his team) and his intelligence in his play are what make him a better player than Ronaldo.

Messi is easily the best player I have ever seen play the game - I'm 42 and grew up idolising Best and Maradona but neither are as good as Messi imo.

Anyway, the answer is of course Aiyegbeni Yakubu. He used to score for fun in shit teams like Portsmouth and 'Boro. He'd have been slamming in 60 goals a season with the sort of service Ronny and Messi got.

In terms of skills there is really nothing to separate them. Where Messi pulls away from Ronaldo is in attitude and loyalty.

Ronaldo has a huge ego and has to be focus of the team. Ronaldo simply won't assist other players on the team. If there is a free kick in a bad position he will still shoot most of the time and Messi has a FAR better assist record. I am convinced Ronaldo sabotaged Bale because Madrid paid more for him and he doesn't want competition.

At the end of the day if 2 players have identical skills I would rather have the team player over the individual 100% of the time.

Didn't seem to belong in the Ronnie controversy thread, so here we are:

Apparently Lithuania was the 150th different team, (110 clubs, 40 countries), that Ronaldo has scored against in an official match.

That has to be some kind of record?

Messi scored his 50th goal of 2019 yesterday, including 34 goals in 32 league games.

This kid could go far.

Got to be Messi for me. As well as just being clearly the superior footballer vs Ronaldo, the goal that he scored against Arsenal to make it 1-0 in the second leg of the 2011 CL knockout tie that they played is my favourite goal of time. The stage and the opponents help make the goal so special, but the speed of thought and execution of that thought to get the ball in the net was superhuman. On first watch in real time it looks like he's struck the ball into the keeper's body and netted the rebound as it bounced up into the air, but then you see it again in the replays and you realise that he's deliberately lifted the ball vertically into the air before he gets to Almunia (who never gets a touch) so that he can then volley the ball in unobstructed over the top of the keeper on the floor. It's god-mode enabled, it's playing with all the cheats on, it's Matrix bullet-time. Fucking love it.

Ronaldo's goal against Samp just emphasised what many have said before. Ronaldo is the most incredible physical specimen that has played the game, while Messi is the most incredible technical player ever but could never do some of the things Ronaldo has managed simply because of their different physicalities.

But I also think Messi edges it because of the way he reads and influences games, which is a level above what Ronaldo can do.

Still maradona for me and Ronaldinho is definitely a big part of the conversation for second place.
See, for me Ronaldinho, and Original Ronaldo, lose out because they didn't have the longevity of the other GOAT competitors. At their peaks they were, fantastic, unstoppable players and quite possibly on a par with any of those who came before and since. Ronaldinho shone brightly but faded just as quickly, and Ronaldo simply struggled too much with injuries.

Maradona, Messi and Ronaldo were/have been peak players for a decade, coming on 15 years with the latter two. That longevity just makes them more incredible in my eyes.

The problem with these type of assessments is 1) Someone like Pele was at is best when most on here weren’t even born. The same to a lesser extent could be said of Maradona. 2) There isn’t any decent television pictures available for particularly Pele. He starred in the 1958 World Cup, got literally kicked out of the 1966 World Cup, and then starred again in the 1970 World Cup.

The same can also be said for Eusébio, Puskás, di Stefano etc.

FWIW, my Dad was telling me yesterday how you could Martin Peters on a pitch now and he'd still be wrold class.
