Well if we signed Lopes then by the sounds of it we'd have cover for LB/RB. Plus we've got Fryers (LB) and Fredericks (RB) We could cash in on Rose and Naughton.

Money in the bank. First team cover. Youngsters making their way into the first team squad.

Sounds too good to be true!

I actually think that is a smart move. The youngsters need to be thrown in the deep end and see if they can compete, which I believe they can.

Save wages and bank on their contracts. Pick someone up in January if failed experiment.

To me our defense has enough for us to be a top 4 team. It's the offensive side of the ball that needs work. We just don't score enough.

Based on what i saw last season, i couldnt disagree more - Our defending was mostly shambolic, devoid of leadership and on a totally different level to the defending that i saw from the teams that actually made the Top-4.

Correct in everything you say, if we go into the season with the centre backs we have I fear for us I really do.

I can't help but think this has more to do with putting a little pressure on City to let us have Micah Richards on loan with a view to a permanent deal than serious intention. Given our concerns at CB having Micah as RB that can cover CB would seem the better option. He has the PL experience, he has had longer to get over his injury.

Just a gut feeling but I think Levy is happy enough with Richards if he can prove he's over his injury so would rather get him on a loan first.

I think Lopes would be a good option and a smart move. Bringing him in means that we can sell Rose and Naughton and have him cover RB and LB squad roles.

Does also mean, as mentioned, we can give a year to ease in Fryers and Fredericks (or even Walker-Peters) into the squad.

Would like to see this happen, could be a smart loan signing...

I agree the Lopes deal probably signals Naughton out. However, there was a rumour yesterday Rose was gonna sign a new contract. ITK suggest Lascalles is incoming, RCB or RB. Meaning we have Walker, Lopes, Lascalles and Frederiks. Maybe loan out Frederiks, if he is successful, he comes back next summer and Lopes deal expires, however if Frederiks doesn't succeed, Spurs take up the option to buy Lopes.

Using your limited foreign quota on backup player who wasn't good enough for Porto or Sporting and was supposedly rather average on Lyon doesn't seem that smart a move.

Foreign quota as it stands:
Lloris
Vorm
Friedel
Vlad
Jan
Younes
BAE
Sandro
Capoue
Paulinho
Dembele
Holtby
Eriksen
Chadli
Lamela
Soldado
Adebayor
Ceballos
Falque

19 and add Lopes it's 20. 3 already too much, so it's bye bye probably to Benny, Ceballos and Falque and as we're looking to offload Dawson and probably bring in some non-hg player, we can cross Friedel off the playing staff. And there's still no flexibility whatsover for jan window, it's foreign player out, foreigin in in principle.

So if Naughton is willing to stay, I'd rather keep him and use that foreign slot on someone else than Lopes.

Friedel and BAE won't be in there and I doubt that Falque will be either.

Agreed. BAE will probably go. Can't see Falque cutting it with us now, too many players ahead of him, and some talented younger players around to take up the 'potential' role. I think Sandro will go if Schneiderlin comes in, and I can potentially see Paulinho going if an offer comes, with Carroll/Mason taking a spot on the grounds of potential and being home grown.

I rate Miguel Lopes as a decent player.

His career in the portuguese league could have been much better. Unluckily, he was at wrong place at the wrong time. In porto he did some good performances and was starting ahead of Danilo. But porto couldn't afford to have an 18M€ player sitting on the bench (an danilo was very unhappy at the time). So, spite of playing very well, he ended up losing his place in the starting eleven. If I remember correctly he was even loaned out, in a move that surprised the fans (not totally convinced by danilo at the time).

He went to Sporting in a really strange, stupid and comic deal. If Sporting decides to sell him below 10M€ they have to pay porto 5M€ and 50% above 10M (Yes! it's true! the previous Sporting chairman was retarded.) This explain why Sporting doesn't want to sell him out. The problem is that he is really on high wages (considering the Sporting financial situation and the impact of the player on the team) so probably the club is willing to loan him out every season until the end of the contract :D It's not that he lacks quality to fight for a starting place at Sporting, it is simply a player that is to expensive for the club and Cedric Soares is playing really well.
