Manchester City plot transfer of Arsenal's 34-year-old Mikel Arteta — but it's not what you think

The midfielder is set to retire as a player at the end of this season and incoming Blues boss Pep Guardiola wants him on his new-look coaching staff

Pep Guardiola wants to make Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta part of his coaching set-up at Manchester City.

Incoming City boss Guardiola has sounded out Arteta - the two are friends after both coming through Barcelona’s famous academy - who is regarded as having a bright future as a manager.

Arteta, 34, who is now fully fit after injury, is expected to retire as a player at the end of the season, and has been preparing for the future by taking his badges and working at the Gunners' academy.

Former Rangers and Everton star Arteta is also close to Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and there could be coaching options there.

He has said Pochettino is “like a father” to him from their time together at Paris Saint-Germain, where the midfielder was sent on loan by Barca as a teenager.

It is unlikely Arteta will stay at Arsenal in a coaching capacity, even though manager Arsene Wenger has said he has a big future in the game.

There are also doubts over whether the Gunners’ academy director Andries Jonker will stay at the club after this summer.

Arsenal are spending big on recruiting for the academy and improving facilities, but Jonker has not proved to be universally popular.

They recently brought back legendary midfielder Liam Brady as a club ambassador, but also to oversee loans for young players.

At first I thought it meant as a player, and I was all like:

But then I saw it was as a coach and I was all like:

Poch said they were close and wouldn't comment on the link - so there could be something in this.

Would be dead against him as a player-coach cos he's been poor for a while as a midfielder.

As a coach, who knows? If Poch thinks he's got the skills to add something to his staff, so be it, couldn't care less about who he's played for before. I imagine there would be some good banter from the players after he joined. Replacing his training kit with an Arsenal kit the dressing room etc etc.

Good player in his day despite never possessing physical attributes particularly suited for some of the leagues he has played in.

If the Manager thinks it would be positive I have no issue with him joining the staff. I don't really see him as Arsenal for some reason even though he has been there a fair while now, him being their captain speaks volumes to the lack of characters in their dressing room rather than him being some dyed in the wool gooner.

Arteta always struck me as a bright guy - on the pitch, and in interviews off. If there's a place on the coaching staff at Spurs for him I would trust Poch on that.

If Poch wants him here then go for it - he is the type of guy you could see becoming a decent coach I think.

Well...If Poch was noncommital & if this rumor is true, one thing is so so obvious....

Poch is staying & staying for good number of years....

How did you come to that conclusion? If Mopo took on Arleta as a backroom staff, he would only take him as part of his coaching team and then to another club, if Mopo was to leave God forbid

As crazy as it sounds, I think if Poch wants to bring him in as backup he wouldn't be a bad option.

Just read Poch would want to bring him in as a coach.

I'm fine with this if he's happy to say on social media that he was only playing there for the money, that it's the devil's club and everybody there's a proper knob and that he shat in Wenger's sleeping bag on the way out
