Appears to be a 13m difference in Valuation. If the player is keen and the club willing to negotiate I fail to see how this struggles to get over the line.

Let's say for argument sake, Inter wont budge. Are we really putting our foot down for the sake of 13m when we're getting a very rare chance for a world class CB that Jose wants. Its abit weird really...

Completely agree it would be a disappointment not to get him if it’s 13m difference considering Foyth is going and that’s the price we want for him! With other teams failing to get targets if we can get him then the top 4 spot is looking that little bit nicer which would ultimately bring more £££ into the club

If it wasn't a pressing position for a player that was more potential rather than proven talent I'd get it.

But this is a leading CB of high quality. You dont get a pop at them often. And 40m isn't an extortionate fee either. Although I get it is in this climate.

The fact Foyth is going out suggests we are looking for an upgrade. If Levy pulls the trigger on this I think it would be smart. Dier is just a liability we don't need in the lineup.

I feel like our best chance of this happening is if Inter concede quite a few tomorrow away at Lazio, Conte throws a wobbly and demands they get in his CB target. Its clear we're happy with what we have, adding a top class CB would be great, but if not, its not the end of the world. Very good window regardless.

Can you name a mistake Dier has made lately? Or are you going to blame poor positioning form the headless chicken Sanchez on him?

I think it'll happen. Inter are well within their rights to hold out for the price they want, hoping that we'll either cave and increase our offer or another team comes in at their price.

Their problem comes when the deadline is fast approaching and neither of those things happen. So they either accept our offer, or they lose out on the funds to bring in a new player, piss their volatile manager off again, pay Skriniar for a season knowing that the manager doesn't want him and then have to sell him at a lower price next season anyway because he'll have only 2 years left on his contract and will have spent a season playing a bit part for Inter.

So yeah, it'll happen. Maybe we'll find some extra funds to increase our offer slightly, and Inter get to feel like they've one the battle of brinkmanship with Levy, but it'll happen.

Imo dier and Sanchez are just about as good as each other, but I don’t like their pairing because I feel they both have a mistake in them and need a better defender next to them to pull them through games. Dier gets no criticism here though weirdly

We need to buy cover for a guy who never played?

Despite moving a DM to that position and promoting a youth product?

I’m all for buying Skriniar but Dier, Alderweireld, Sanchez, and Tanganga is ample coverage.

I don’t want to see us like United or Arsenal with about 12 CBs on the books that aren’t good enough.
We were lucky not to have too many injuries to centre backs last season. It would only take 2 to be out and we have 2 left and that would be difficult with such a congested season. If we had another injury list to our forwards I feel a lot more confident now. If we had that with centre backs not so much. 12 CBs is a huge exaggeration considering I'm only talking about 5 centre backs. We have better depth in centre midfield than centre back and in the ideal world I would replace one for a centre back. Especially considering Dier can cover in midfield.

Your either looking in the wrong places, or not trying hard enough.
I have seen plenty critical of Dier on here

If we go in with a roster like that I can imagine Tanganga receiving almost 0 minutes.

It sounds like being overly cautious and I can’t even see how you can register a squad that large. If you’re preparing for 2 injuries at each position I can’t see how you can have a squad large enough to cover it all.

Have we actually ever had 2 CBs injured at once? To my memory it’s not a very

iirc we had started gallas and nelson together when they were the only fit CBs...

This is Levy's wet dream negotiation situation.

- Inter need funds
- Player wants to come
- Player not in Managers plans
- Conte not likely to be happy if he doesn't get the player he actually wants as replacement
- Spurs not desperate
- No immediate game for 2 weeks after deadline day so no rush to get him into our squad

Not only will Levy hold his nerve until late on deadline day. He'd actually be silly not to given the context above. He holds all the cards on this one which is probably why Inter are making the public noises that they are because its their only tactic to try and gain some leverage but Levy won't flinch.

I wouldn't even be surprised if he is fully willing to pay the full fee but is just seeing what he can squeeze out of them first.

Only flaw in your logic is that Inter want a replacement. Therefore, they cant wait until very last minute, unless Italy has an extended domestic window and their target is Italian.

This is a good appraisal on the state of play.

Also, the fact there's more noise coming out about us pressing for the Juve CB seems all like a coordinated plan. I am still slightly realistic on this and feel it'll just be too much to get over the line, but who knows

December 2018.

When we played Burnley, we were without four CB options in Vertonghen, Sanchez, Dier and Foyth.

Davies was forced to play as a centre back in a flat back four for the first time in his career. Toby was alongside him. Eyoma was on the bench.

We won 1-0.

Four days later, Davies played there again. Foyth was fit enough for the bench this time.

However, he wasn't needed as we beat Arsenal 2-0 in the Carling Cup.

Chances are Davies was actually injured too as he played through most of the 2018-19 season with pain in his groin, having surgery only after the season had finished.

It's one of the reasons I think Ben Davies gets unfair treatment on this site.
