Well the thing to do now is bung him an extra £10-15k a week and get him on a 5-6 year contract. Gives us some breathing space. Will only be 3 years left at the end of the season correct ?
Osman Chavez, a little known Honduran international who plays centre-back for Puerto Cortes side Platense, is currently on trial with Tottenham Hotspur, where he is being assessed by Harry Redknapp after receiving commendation from midfield lynchpin Wilson Palacios, but the Cockney coach has conceded that the abundant transfer rumours linking Spurs with a plethora of star names hold no substance.
Tottenham have been linked with a player-plus-cash swap deal for Manchester United's Michael Carrick, a move for Portsmouth goalkeeper David James, and Chelsea's skill-packed attacker Joe Cole. Although, Redknapp admits admiring the trio, he is not desperate to add to his ranks prior to the closure of the summer window.
Regarding his trialist, Chavez, who has completed his first day training in north London, Redknapp said, "Wigan have done very well picking up players from there, a striker and a left-back, so this bloke was recommended.
"I asked Wilson about him and he likes [him] so I said, 'We'll get him over and see what he's about.'"
On trading Luka Modric for Carrick, Redknapp looked surprised to hear of such a whisper. "Never heard about that one," he said.
"Luka Modric is a great player, so is Carrick. I want to keep Luka here! Oh Sir Alex likes him, but I liked [Cristiano] Ronaldo, that doesn't mean I'll get him!
"There's nothing on David James, that's just another rumour."
He continued, "Joe Cole is a fantastic player. He's at Chelsea. Any team would like Joe, but he's not even a player we've made a phone call over."
When probed as to whether he will sign any more players, Redknapp pondered, "A week is it [until the window closes]? Monday? Tuesday? We're not looking desperately.
"We're pretty much okay. If anyone came along that could change the team we'd change things, but there is not much on the horizon."
Surely he does not deserve a new contract yet? His first season was mixed.
And Man Utd haven't even made a bid or anything.
I'd love the quotes if a dizzlying offer from Man Utd was on the table but as it stands, Fergs just said some nice things about him last year and that is it.
To be fair to Modric, he did want to correct the misleading quotes, so good for him but I don't think he deserves more money when his first year is just over.
Its not uncommon for a team to offer a new contract to a player 1 year into their career though. It gives the player a year to prove they can play at this level. Modric has certainly done that and i wouldn't be surprised if we offer him a pay rise soon. It wouldn't surprise me if he's on a much smaller wage than King and Woodgate tbh. He should be one of our higher paid players. Especially considering his professionalism and great attitude.
Not really about whether he deserves it as such (though he does 'deserve' it as much as anybody who's been given a pay rise recently. It's about how much he's worth and will be worth in a couple of years
He's not developed enough for the top 4 to be willing to pay the price Levy will want for him, and Man Citeh already have Ireland. So I don't think we have to fear for him this window.
He will probably get a new contract next spring though, so next summer could be worrying...
As I've posted before he didn't come here with a view to spending his career here, we are a stepping stone to a more successful club however in two years we'll have a new ground and if we can continue our improvement we may be able to take that step with him, it probably won't be soon enough but we shall see.
