yeah this was an interesting quote from H on sky

"The chairman wants to keep him, I want to keep him and we need him if we're going to progress. We need him and, as he said to me this morning, we need to add to him."

Modders has obviously had enough of playing with the likes of Crouch and Defoe. Who can blame him, I've had enough of watching them.

Surely Levy saying we need to add to Modric is even better than the player saying it, as the Chairman is in a far better position to make it happen than any of the playing staff.

Yet, you guys keep watching Sky hoping to see anything about this.

You're the cause...not Sky. If nobody watched, they would change their format. They have business model based on what will get the highest number of mindless people to watch. And since Chelsea have few fans within England, its the bigger club that makes up the numbers on this one.

Like a bird who keeps flying into a plate glass window.

Hey...I'm mindless, but I don't watch sky...how's that fit into your grand theory:razz:

He ain't going nowhere.

He has said he will not put in a transfer request. That means 50m. At that price I would sell him.

We will keep him

Probably a gentleman's agreement somewhere that he will leave next season, like Fabregas.[/quote

Why so ULTIMATELONER?

Modric has agreed to put club before his own career progression. So in return we must have offered him something, and the most logical thing is that we won't stand his way if he wants a move next time round. He has basically given us a year to replace him.

Modric hasn't put club before his career. Levy has told him he won't be sold, we don't have to offer him anything as he is contracted to play for us. Imo if we offers him anything its to point out what plsyers he thinks will push is to challange for the title

If this is true, surely if Modric's cotention is that he wants to be in a competitive team capable of winning things, his motiovation for leaving would be if we still weren't competitive. I would suspect, therefore, that if (and it's a big 'if') Levy has done this it would be purely contingent on us not qualifying for CL, not winning anything and not looking like we can win anything.

And this, anyway.

@Yid-ol
He is contracted to play for us but i think we I appreciate that given player power he has the option to push for a move; he was probably given an incentive for showing loyalty. It could be anything including money etc but my guess is we don't stop his move because other top 5 clubs could offer bigger incentives.

I personally don't think that the purpose of a contract is to keep a player at a club; i think it's more to do with ensuring we get some value should the player decide to go.

@StartingPrice
I don't think his motivation to leave us is purely because we arent as good a footballing side as the top 4. I think thats only 1 factor, others include money (he gets alot of sign-on bonus), playing with more famous players, being in CL sustainably etc.

Sorry, not having a go, but I can't make much sense of the first part of your post.

Secondly, I think the primary purpose of a lengthy contract is to give both parties a certain degree of security. Why would we give a player that degree of security, if the degree of security we got in return wasn't to keep a player at the club? I understand what you are saying, and, yes, part of it is in reaction to the Bosman ruling, and subsequent developments where players can leave/buy themselves out. But clubs do give players lengthy contracts, IMHO, with the intention of squad development - how many times did we say we were building a team around Modric? Would we attempt to do that without the security of knowing he would be at the club for a few years?

Thirdly, I never said that the footballing side of things was his only reason for looking to move on. I am countering posters who are arguing that his sole reason for moving is money. I am trying ot show that there are other viable alternatives. I am aware that in the real World, motivations are often complex, and made of of several non-exclusive factors.

Modric openly upset with Levy!

Angry Modric blasts Levy, still wants Chelsea move

ESPN staff
July 10, 2011
Luka Modric has delivered an explosive interview on Sunday in which he accuses Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy of going back on a gentleman's agreement, before declaring that he still expects to leave the club this summer.
Modric saw a £22 million bid from Chelsea rejected by Spurs, prompting him to head from crisis talks with Levy. The result was a statement from the club insisting Modric would not be allowed to leave White Hart Lane.
However, discontent is still palpable surrounding the midfielder schemer, with Rafael van der Vaart revealing his colleague is "disappointed" by the outcome of last week's meeting, while manager Harry Redknapp confessed Modric still wants to leave.
On Sunday Modric finally broke his own silence, claiming Tottenham's chairman "did not care" what he wanted, whilst stating he still hopes to engineer a move to Chelsea before the end of the summer transfer deadline.
Asked what he would do if Spurs refuse to let him leave, Modric was quoted as telling Sportske Novosti: "I haven't thought about it at all because [not letting me go] would definitely not be good for anyone. I have already told the chairman that last summer he said we would find a mutually satisfactory agreement if a club like Chelsea came in.
"I hope that eventually he will understand the situation and that we will reach an agreement and go our separate ways in an appropriate manner."
Elaborating on his meeting with Levy, Modric revealed the Spurs chairman was happy to let the midfielder spend the season rotting in the reserves if he did not honour his long-term contract.
"A lot has been published in the press about the meeting with Levy, who gave the public a twisted account of what happened.
"I must say that I am genuinely disappointed about what Levy said to me. He didn't care about what I was telling him. It all only convinced me further that I was right to consider moving on to another club.
"I reminded the chairman of our gentleman's agreement when we were in Dubrovnik last summer and I agreed a contract extension with Tottenham. Then I had an open chat with Levy that if a bigger club came in with a concrete offer, we would consider it and agree the best solution for all concerned.
"The chairman said, 'Okay, we'll sit and talk [about any offers]'. Now Levy doesn't want to talk to me and said there is no possibility that I can leave Spurs.
"He threatened me - he said if I didn't accept the club's stance, they would make me sit on the bench or in the stands."
Modric also cemented his desire to play for new Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas, revealing his mind is already at Stamford Bridge, not Tottenham.
"There is no doubt that Chelsea want me - they sent a concrete offer to Tottenham. I know that the new Chelsea boss said he wants me in his team. Of course I am flattered by this interest in me - it's a club that all players dream of joining, fighting for every competition available.
"It wasn't a snap decision - I talked a long time with my family and people whose opinions I respect. I thought about it, weighed it all up, and finally decided this was the best option."
