Just a thought:

Vdv replaces Modric, we get a quality defensive midfielder to pair up with Sandro (Diarra, perhaps) and a creative, attacking, young midfielder with some flair (Hazard, Marin etc) and play with a lone striker. It'd probs lead to us letting in fewer goals + we'll pack more of a punch as far as attacking goes. We'd lost the linking between defence and offense which Modric provides so blooming well, though.

The biggest concern for me is not whether Luka Modric leaves for Chelsea. It's whether Daniel Levy will be bold enough to spend the incoming money on a high quality replacement. Too many people assume that to be the case, when in reality, we could replicate the Berbatov saga by waiting to sell to Chelsea late in the transfer window, leaving us no time to properly bring in a Modric replacement.

The number one target in my mind should be Keisuke Honda. He's at CSKA and looks to be available for roughly 20 million pounds. He's a massive idol in Japan and would sell enough shirts to offset whatever wages he comes in on. He's also a fantastic football player. He can make our team tick with finesse, plays with fighting spirit off the ball, has a fantastic left foot, and is better finding the goal than Modric, too.

Again though, I am skeptical that between this Modric saga and the ongoing stadium issues, that Levy can deliver the incoming transfers necessary to see us progress.

Everything will be clear in roughly 6 weeks time.

It is not a disaster because one player is (prospectively) leaving, no matter who that player is - it is a major set-back for the club symbolically, and somoething that our Chairman may never recover form in terms of credibility.

This has been said over-and-over again, so why do certain posters imagine wwe just need a lecture on who we could replace him with:shrug:
Agreed.

Excellent call. Saw a lot of him in the Asian Cup in January. Class player and really makes a midfield tick.
Having said that, I still want Modric to rot in the reserves for a year.

I would rot him in the reserves and I wouldn't let him train or mix with the first team either.

We have the power for once. We have him on a long term contract and are not desperate for money. At the end of the day he will go but whether its 2012 or 2013 is no skin off our nose.

I would give him a squad number but only play him in Europe. Give him some nice flight time with the kids to make him think if he's doing the right thing.

Its broken now but its possible to fix this a la Rooney and he should get some more money but we hold all the cards here.

Following on from what Ackie suggested in the ITK thread regarding Modric, and would he stay if Spurs were to appointed Ancelloti in place of Harry?
I think it would definitely help. He'd be more of a draw to Modric, he'd be more of a draw to new signings, and he'd fit in our long term plans as opposed to Redknapps possible last season with us.
Probably would be a good thing for the club, but they have no grounds really to sack Redknapp…………… yet. Lets see where we sit come October / November time and things might change.

Why did Levy agitate the situation?

I'm not stupid, there is no way he could sell Modric for a tidy sum and save face with the fans.

So what I'll do is take a strong stance pubicly, then provoke Modric with arrogance and turn the supporters against him.

If I wanted to keep the player happy and calm surely I would listen and then put the case forward. Explain the team plans for the upcoming season, show Modders the so called ambition. As Modric has stated he did'nt even talk to him.

1) You don't know that he didn't do any of this.

2) Maybe if Modric had went to him and said that he sees chelsea had made a bid for him, although he could see that the bid was derisory, so could they discuss it, rather than massively weakening Levy's hand (which was what chelsea intended all along with that derisory bid) by giving those pathetic whiny interviews before even speaking to Levy, his attitude may have been softer.

As it is, Modric comes across as a sneaky coward with zero respect for the club, the people involved with it and the fans by doing that. Why are you just accepting his version of this discussion?

This...Modric started this with his interview in the paper, how did he expect Levy to react? For Modric to call Levy arrogant is absolutely pathetic.

Wenger is insisting in Malaysia or wherever they are that he will not be selling Nasri Fibreglass.

Can you imagine red saying that in public? No.

All you get from him is 'The lads confused' We should make a stand here and let the twat rot in the reserves for a year. His price wont change but maybe his attitude will.

It's a really delicate situation though isn't it. HR needs to keep Modric on side without contradicting Levy. I think him refusing to answer questions on the topic might help but personally I think the media would go to town on HR refusing to talk about the subject insinuating whatever they bloody well pleased.

This whole situation is now becoming tiresome. My disappointment is painful as Modric has been my favourite player since he joined us and he is, indeed, worthy of medals and club titles because he is incredibly talented. The gloss and shine on him has dulled for me and I'm really sorry about it.

It cements my belief (knowledge even) that loyalty for a club among footballers hardly exists nowadays. The one-club footballer is almost as rare as hens' teeth.

It reflects society's greed for instant gratification which is a pity, as building and working towards something actually gives you far more pleasure in the long run, even though it takes longer than the grab-it-now success option.

I already made a musical analogy about the difference between football as it is now and that of yesteryear and now I'll make a different one about footballers in this situation: if you've ever grown your own produce, which takes time and effort and nurturing, and tasted the difference between that and a fruit or vegetable that has been sitting on a supermarket shelf, you'll know which tastes sweeter.

Luka, Luka... yet another talented but shallow footballer. What a shame.

Exactly.
And the shame of it is that even if he stays, and we hit heights (i.e. winning trophis, or dare I say even the EPL), making him want to remain, even if he stays 2 or 3 years, performing out of this World, I will never have the same feeling for him.

Evening Standard are saying that chelsea will now made a bid of £27million. I'd take it, and put an end to the whole sorry episode, plus £27million could buy some decent players. Remember, when we finished 4th, Modric missed a lot of that season, and we coped pretty well without him.

£27m, are you mental?! He has 5 years with us and a decision to make: either spend the peak of his career rotting in the stands or pull his socks up, accept the terms of the contract he signed and continue to play well for us.

IF we found ourselves in a position where we felt we had to sell him to Chelsea (i don't think that will happen at least for two seasons) then we should demand a player swap rather than the cash, i.e. significantly weakening their team to prevent us losing ground on rivals. Luiz and Mcheacran would do.
