Sheringham was a slow burner. Didn't play for England until he was 27.

Being "finished" as a top flight player by the age of 21 is very much a modern thing in the game. Part of the Soccer AM fan mentality, along with calling clubs by the names of Chelski and cheering when the ref produces a spray can.

Kane needs a run of games to get his confidence up. It seems any momentum he gets is dashed by the manager in charge.

Not saying he will be a world beater or even make it at ours long term but I think he deserves a real chance now given his competition continue to fuck it up week after week.

Well, i did, just about every home game he played .. and maybe folks watching Kane in U21/reserves see it .. but in all the home games Kane has played for the first team he has shown nothing like Sheringham ....

He'll probably get some games, he won't do well and you'll be slating him .. whatever .. its all rather missing the point of my original post .. and showing why too many spurs fans just keep looking for the next new toy in hope of some miracle ..

Lol, yeah, that's what I'll be doing, slating him, despite my constant praise for him and push for his inclusion in the team, as well as defending him against the morons who keep saying he'll never be good enough/Championship player etc.

Doh.

At no point today did we play well. Newcastle were a QPR level of poor in the first half. In the second half they played like an average Prem team.

We were WOEFUL today, a really shockingly bad performance. I was a big fan of Poch but this match in particular really has me worried.

Progress was there. A bad 15 mins in the second half doesn't erase those signs for me. Still disappointed but I'm not expecting anything spectacular this season so maybe my disappointment isn't as much as those of you who expect a top 4 challenge again?

Your comparing Sheringham at his peak with a developing 21 y/o. I bet Sheringham showed less of the intelligence, awareness and link play, that he was later renowned for, when he was 21 (playing in the old 2nd division with Millwall) than Kane does now.

Sheringham was a goal machine in his early career... instinctive finisher and superb header of the ball. He was always an intelligent footballer, but it wasn't until he got into his late 20's that he started to change his game to the more considered and creative player that would define his 30's. It's easy to remember him as that player seeing as he played until he was 40, but he was an out and out CF at Millwall and Forest. Kane's touch, control and speed of thought/decision making is slow, but he is an instinctive finisher and has a lot of promise if you ask me.

Exactly right .. maybe he will develop a la shareingham, but for now I maintain he needs, like JD, to play with another striker and in poch's system that is unlikely ... hence my worry is illustrated by Kane, but not against Kane .. across most of the squad, the players don't fir with Pochetinos system and there is no point at all calling for 4-4-2 as the manager is there day-in day-out developing a sytem and if we don't want it, then we will get another manager ... and that will not help .. we have to stick with one system.

Interestingly Koeman's success at southampton, is, I suspect, in part due to the fact that they lost a lot of Poch's players .. and thus Koeman (who plays a different system) could, and did, bring in specific players that fit his model.

Sadly, Poch inherited a large squad with little money to spend ... thus it will take time for us to move players on and cycle round ... that is time the spurs faithful will not give him ... and then Levy will react ...
