I thought someone had said this. Rooney only plays well with Ronaldo and Tevez? Indeed.

So Rooney scores more goals therefore he is a better player ?

The fact that Rooney is now being played in a far more forward role than he was previously has a lot to do with that.

Rooney's a good footballer who also works hard, but I still stand by what I said. He, like any decent English player is ultimately over rated and to realise this all you have to do is watch England play.

No he was always a great player, the fact that without Ronaldo and Tevez he has got better doesn't do your point that he looks good because of them any favours. The fact that he can play further foward on his own and do well, or behind another or out wide makes him more than a good player. Darren Fletcher is a good player, Jermaine Jenas is a good player, Dirk Kuyt is a good player- they all work hard.

I would put Rooney a few levels ahead of them. How England play is not that relevant even if Rooney has been better for us of late. For his club, he has been fantastic and he is not even at his peak. 'Over-rated' is a wide term. Messi could be over-rated if someone said he was the best player ever. But to interpret that term the way you did re Rooney was just a sweeping generalisation of all English players, some of which was true- in this case it was an unequivocal statement about one player which now looks rather silly.

Messi is overrated too. Has anyone watched Argentina recently? he's shit for them.

You only need to have watched the ACN to realise Drogba isn't that good either, because stick him in a CIV shirt and he's not the player he is for Chelsea.

Of course the above are rubbish, but that's the point BC seems to be making.

Has anyone caught Darren Gough spouting this sort of nonsense on talksport? What a lemon.

Yeah as every has said international football is a whole different kettle of fish, as the Messi example demonstrates.
I'm pretty sure the likes of Real and Barca would be very pleased indeed to sign Rooney..which should tell you something. He isn't overrated.*
Of course, in saying that, he's still more suited to english football.

* Go watch the 5-2 v Us highlights again...it's Rooney that destroyed us that day more than Ronaldo or anyone else.. (Howard Webb excepted )

I haven't read this entire thread but if Gabby Agbonlahor hasn't already been mentioned then that's shocking.

Having read the various threads about players like Terry and Gerrard being in the top 5 in the world in their positions, I will bet its these same fans that think that England is up there with the best and are favourites to win the World Cup!

I was chatting with a few friends in the pub and we got onto the most over-rated players. The responses were pretty spectacular and it seemed no English player was rated highly by everyone in the room. Everyones suggestions of who is over-rated seemed to be jumped all over by everyone else with "what are you talking he's absolute quality" just for that person to come out with just as wild a suggestion.

From recent times I came out with:

Gerrard - very good player but seems to get rated as highly as the true greats. His passing is often sloppy and despite scoring 30 yard crackers (my thought to why we rate him so highly much like Matt Taylor was rated for a while after a couple of long range goals) I simply don't rate his technical ability as very good whatsoever. Can't remember him having a good game for England since the Germany 5-1 win and once again that was based mostly on a speculative long range goal.

Gareth Barry - simply the flavour of the month. Did nothing of note for Villa for years. Lampard and Gerrard weren't working and with Carrick and Hargreaves out Ginger Steve had little option but to play Barry. As a better foil for Stevie G than Fat Frank the country went wild for the Aston Villa midfielder. Shame that as soon as we played good opposition in Croatia and Russia he exposed as average and we were knocked out (not blaming Barry for the defeats). The few times I've seen Villa play recently it seems Reo-Coker is their real diamond in the rough.

So I know most will jump all over me with the Steven Gerrard claim but anyone going to come out with an opinion on a player you think is over-rated that the rest of the world seems to think is world class?

i was hoping that when he had the bust up with o'neil we might make a enquiry, i really like reo coker. Would be good next to wilson or to cover him if he was out
