Lineker's paid 2m out of the public broadcasting budget per annum. Big money, and the price for that is impartiality. If you feel the insupressable need to join the ranks of the self-appointed activists, that's fine - so long as you resign your post and forgo your payments out of the public purse. You cannot have your cake and eat it.
A nice piece of misinformation. Entertainment presenters, including sport, are allowed to air political views outside of the BBC.

This is clearly party political and because he’s speaking against the government. A Tory even said today that if he shared the opposite view it’d be an issue for Labour, confirming that it is the view, not that he expressed it, is the problem.

He's paid that as a sports presenter, not that his salary matters a jot in this situation.
That shouldn't mean that he can't have opinions on anything else when he's not doing his job.
Not only this, but who’s stupid enough to believe Lineker is speaking for the BBC? Obviously there’s a few because they’re probably the same ones stupid enough to swallow a lot of other shit.

All true. But he really shouldn’t be surprised that the BBC would react. He’s not an idiot and knew precisely what would be inferred from that reference.

A former head of the BBC has said it was a mistake to take Gary Lineker off air following the presenter's criticism of government asylum policy.
Greg Dyke's comments come as the BBC's flagship football show Match of the Day descended into crisis, with staff withdrawing in support of Lineker.
The show's six main pundits and its entire commentary team have stepped back from Saturday's programme.

Mr Dyke said the BBC "undermined its own credibility" by suspending Lineker.

"There is a long established precedent in the BBC that if you are an entertainment presenter or a sports presenter then you are not bound by those same rules," Mr Dyke - who served as director general between 2000 and 2004 - told the BBC's Today programme.

"The real problem today is that the BBC has undermined its own credibility by doing this," he said, adding that the move could create the impression that the "BBC has bowed to government pressure".

So, just to be clear, you're cool with him showing complete on-air bias in the field that he reports on and turning up to work in underpants.

But a tweet made outside of work on an unrelated topic is unacceptable?

He is an idiot. Providing nonsense soundbites. Comparing a complex situation with nazi Germany is farcical.

This article sums it up perfectly, imo

I think the pundits have overplayed their hand here, BBC are about to find out they've been wildly overestimating the importance of pundits for decades. People only care about pundits when the options are good pundits vs shit ones. Well they're about to find out people are very happy to have option 3 which is no pundits and the BBC is gonna be over the moon when they find out how much they can save

He's freelance, they've just stated that on 5Live, a BBC station.
That's not a surprise. The BBC has encouraged a lot of its expensive staff to go down the self-employed route because it's a lot cheaper than paying them as employees. They are all embarrassed to find that HMRC regards the arrangement as tax avoidance/evasion.

Totally agree. Paid a lot of money for doing f*** all. All expenses paid holidays all around the world, under the guise of being an authoritative voice on football. Get rid of him and all the other idiots that pose as pundits.

Not really relevant to the discussion though is it?

Most people would probably be just a happy with seeing passionate youtuber types sitting there talking about the game.
They'd accept hundred times less for this part time gig as well.
It's the highlights that's the star of the show. Actually a bit upsetting that so much of the public money goes to ex footballers for this.

I do think Lineker is a prat and I do wonder if he is just trying to come off as a good guy sometimes.

Didn't he once criticise people for not taking refugees in their homes?

However, he shouldn't be held to standards when they don't apply to others - simply because they criticise or abuse the 'right' people
