But this is very different to Bobbins lie that he isn’t entitled to air a political view.

Did you… did you just miss the bit where I said it doesn’t apply to Lineker, and that his tweet doesn’t meet the criteria…

Did you just miss that

Whatever Lineker’s contract might or might not say, he is not being disciplined for expressing a political opinion, he’s being disciplined for expressing the wrong political opinion.

This tweet didn’t get him suspended:

I don't think that's strictly true because you'd need to compare to if the Labour party complained as much, which is the key thing I think; that the Tory's deflected attention from them onto this, plus it depends when he signed his contract and any potential changes due to the increase in political opinions in sport.

And if you bothered to pay attention you would know why. The Corbyn tweet was made in 2017. His latest contract with the BBC - which includes specific guidelines about not making political comments - was signed in 2020. Do you get it now?

Facts aren't political. He's being taken down for stating a fact (there is no huge influx, we don't take in more refugees. That is fact) and the final part of the tweet about language is backed up by multiple academics who study 1930s Germany for a living.
Non of which matters. He’s tweeting about politics having signed a contract where he agreed not to.

Funny how presenters at the BBC need to be perceived to be impartial, whereas if you are running the organisation political bias is pretty much a job requirement

You can make this point without having to be so insulting with it.

Do you seriously think it’s a coincidence that the first time this new guideline has been tested is when the criticism has been directed towards the government and the Tory press have been baying for blood?

Rather than for say (check the time stamp) this directed at a trade union leader by the star of one of the BBC’s flagship shows:

accusing the government of being Nazis doesn’t fit the criteria.

I think it's important not to distort what he actually said. He hasn't accused the government of being Nazis. He's accused the government of using language that is similar to what was used by the Nazis. Some might say I'm just being pedantic, but there's a massive difference.

That earlier Jonathan Pie vid summed it up brilliantly.

The BBC guidelines also states: "There are also others who are not journalists or involved in factual programming who nevertheless have an additional responsibility to the BBC because of their profile on the BBC. We expect these individuals to avoid taking sides on party political issues or political controversies and to take care when addressing public policy matters."

Surely the part when it say…. “We expect these individuals to avoid taking side…”

The word EXPECT is very different from ‘do not permit’, or ‘ban’ …

At the end of the day - as with everything, unless they apply this consistently (which they don’t), then it kind of has no worth or standing at all.

Which contract is Sugar working to? Is it the same as the one Lineker signed?

Talk of contracts is a red herring. It’s a company guideline that isn’t specific to individual contracts.

If there’s a problem with Lineker speaking up (which I don’t believe there is) then there’s a problem with Sugar doing it, or Brady for that matter who also appears on the apprentice but donates large sums to the Tories.

The bbc caved to government pressure. It was cowardly and wrong.

This is the part that the BBC really got wrong here.

Even if you think the government did not pressure the BBC (They did), the BBC have left themselves looking like they have been pressured by the government to act.

The very nature of their "impartiality" policy has been compromised by their actions here.
