I thought this was a very strange one.

Wesley Sneijder has revealed Jose Mourinho urged him not to leave Inter Milan for Manchester United this summer.

Mourinho left the Italian side for Real Madrid last year but advised the Dutchman to stay in Milan rather than seek a move to Old Trafford.

Mourinho's involvement in trying to prevent the deal is likely to anger United fans, who still remember his old battles with Sir Alex Ferguson while managing Chelsea.

Sneijder said: “I didn’t want to leave. I’m happy here. I never thought about leaving.

“When I was on vacation the club called my agent and said they needed money, so wanted to sell me.

“This is the only reason I spoke to Manchester United, which everyone knows I did. Then Samuel Eto’o was sold and nothing more came of it. I don’t know of any interest from Manchester City.

“I’m happy that I got to stay, as I love the city of Milan, the people, Italian football and I know Inter are a strong side.

“I’d love to stay to the end of my contract in 2015, but it doesn’t just depend on me. I was relaxed throughout the summer because I knew what I wanted. Besides, I’m used to being on the market.

“Mourinho advised me and he has Inter at heart, so he told me to stay. He’s a wonderful coach.”
